The New Hampshire Purple Geranium (Geranium sanguineum 'New Hampshire Purple') is easy to care for, and generally pest-free, and its beautiful bright magenta-pink color makes this one of the best Cranesbill Geraniums to have in your landscape!

New Hampshire Purple Geranium produces a profusion of magenta-purple flowers on compact mounds of green deeply notched leaves that turn a brilliant crimson-red in the fall. It may be one of the most commonly grown Geranium varieties in the U.S.!

New Hampshire Purple will adjust easily to both hot summer and cold winter climates throughout USDA planting zones 4 to 8, growing just shy of 15 inches tall and spreading 18 inches wide. The lovely blooms attract pollinators, but deer and rabbits tend to leave these hardy perennials alone, and you'll love their resilience as they return bigger and better every year!

Landscape Application:

This gorgeous and compact Cranesbill is one of the most vigorous Hardy Geraniums! Ideal for the front of a sunny border as filler or edging, although New Hampshire Purple will cope just fine with a fairly shady spot as well. Tuck into woodland gardens, dappled meadows, or throughout the sunny shortgrass prairie setting where Cranesbill seems to meld beautifully in any setting.

Any sized garden benefits from the New Hampshire Purple Geranium too! From balcony and Container gardens, to large en masse drifts, these tough native cultivars are up for the challenge! Useful as erosion control on hillsides and hard-to-mow slopes, to adding bright cheerful color to Rock gardens, Pollinator borders, and Cottage gardens alike!

  • Magenta Pink Flowers
  • Adored by Pollinators
  • Compact Deeply Incised Green Foliage
  • Crimson Leaves In Autumn
  • Woodlands, Meadows, Informal Gardens, Groupings & En Masse

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Cranesbill is generally quite adaptable to a variety of growing conditions. Though it prefers full sun, they can tolerate some shade, especially in hotter climates. Plant in moist, well-drained soil for best results. It is as wonderful a choice for southern gardens as it is for northern regions. Needing moderate moisture at first, these perennials become drought-tolerant once established. Top-dressing with 3-4 inches of arborist mulch helps support plant roots significantly!

It is recommended to lift and divide large clump colonies in spring, to maintain the best growth and health of the plants. Shear back after the first wave of blooms and you’ll enjoy a second flush. Then in autumn in cooler climates, or early spring in warm growing zones, prune back the entire plant and remove debris before new growth begins.

  • Full Sun & Part Sun/Part Shade
  • Moderately Moist Soil
  • Any Well-Drained Soil Type
  • Prune Back Leaves Late Autumn/Early Spring
  • Deer & Rabbits Seldom Bother Geraniums
