Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: These thrive in full sun and need at least 6 hours of direct light daily. While they can survive in partial shade, they will become "leggy" (floppy and weak stems) and produce significantly fewer flowers.
  • Soil: Excellent drainage is non-negotiable for this plant. They prefer poor, sandy, or rocky soils over rich loam. If you have heavy clay soil, you must amend it heavily with coarse material or plant in a raised bed, as wet feet will quickly rot the roots.

Watering Requirements

When you first plant your Gaillardia, water it regularly to keep the soil slightly moist while the root system settles in. Once established, this plant is incredibly drought-tolerant and prefers to dry out between waterings. If you are inconsistent or overwater, the plant is more likely to suffer from root rot than from being too dry. Think of it as a plant that thrives on a little bit of neglect regarding moisture.

Pruning Tips

This plant produces flowers on new growth, so keeping it fresh is key. Deadheading is the most important task; this means snipping off faded blooms just above the next set of leaves. Doing this stops the plant from putting energy into making seeds and redirects that energy into making more flowers. If the plant starts looking messy or sprawled out in mid-summer, don't be afraid to shear the whole clump back by about one-third. It’s like a summer haircut that encourages a flush of fresh, tight growth and new blooms for fall.

Fertilizer Needs

SpinTop™ Red is a light feeder and actually performs better without heavy fertilization. A single application of a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring is all it needs, if anything. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers or feeding late in the season. High nitrogen forces the plant to grow lush foliage at the expense of flowers, resulting in a floppy, green plant with very few red blooms.

The SpinTop™ team has outdone themselves with this thrilling selection. Add effortless drama in thin, well-drained soil where other plants fail. You'll love this sultry breakthrough in color breeding! Elegant SpinTop™ Red Gaillardia (Gaillardia aristata 'Spintop Red') develops eye-catching blooms with deep, dark centers. These intensely red, rough-textured flowers offer many months of interest. Enjoy the upright, well-branched mound of non-stop blooms from late spring until frost!

Also called Red Blanket Gaillardia, this Blanket Flower is a dazzling choice when you prefer a more elegant colorway. They'll be an excellent counterpoint to other native Gaillardia Blanket Flowers, but look very high-end by themselves. The 12-15 inch mounds of coarse green leaves are the perfect foil for these vivid blooms and their long slender stems!

Very cold-hardy throughout USDA growing zones 4 through 9, these are perfect for fire-wise landscaping and xeric locations in the sun! Deer and rabbits tend to pass these by, but every hummingbird, honeybee, and butterfly will flock to these pollen and nectar-rich blossoms!

Planting and Application:

Revamp a hard-to-mow slope with a gorgeous mass planting of this durable Waterwise perennial. Plant nine inches apart for a signature style all season without much ongoing effort! Use this technique to create edging and rows in hot dry sites, and as facer plants in dry garden beds. These small, space-saving Blanket Flowers are glorious in large planters or terra cotta pots around your patios, balconies, or front porch container gardens!

Why not place these sun-loving perennials at the base of a special boulder in a sandy Rock Garden? Perfect cut flower garden plants and for pollinator borders, these add long-lasting lush colors until late in the season much to the delight of your pollinators! Pair them with our other bold flowers like Butterfly Bushes, Yarrow, Coneflower, and Salvia. Mix and match with your favorites for a personalized presentation you'll be so proud of!

  • Vibrant Blanket Flower With Exceptional Rich Pigments
  • Special Selection of Native Herbaceous Perennial
  • Long-Lasting Season of Blooms - Late Spring Through Frost
  • Flowers Support Butterflies & Beneficial Pollinators
  • Healthy Mound of Upright Foliage
  • Long Flower Stems Make Showy Cut Flowers

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Give Gaillardia a spot in full sun, where the soil drains quickly after a rain. They won't tolerate wet heavy clay soils or areas that might be wet in winter. Once their roots are established, they'll become a durable, Waterwise addition to a Xeric landscape. Thriving in average to low fertility and almost any type of well-drained soil. Gaillardia self-seeds, so deadhead after the blooms fade is recommended, and to encourage a rebloom, but if you miss a few in the fall - the songbirds will help themselves to the snack. Prune back in late fall once the foliage begins to yellow.

  • Loves Full Sun
  • Well-Drained Average Soil & Moderate Moisture
  • Deadhead for Rebloom & Prune Late Fall
  • Low Maintenance
  • Heat Tolerant & Waterwise Once Established
  • Seldom Damaged by Deer
