Fruit lovers go crazy for the Aprium®! A delightfully yummy dual cross between an Apricot and a Plum. Like its cousin, the Pluot®, the sweet Flavor Delight Aprium® Tree (Prunus aprium 'Flavor Delight') gives you the best of two orchard flavors in one fruit!

It isn't all about the excitingly delicious taste of this Apricot/Plum cross, though, you'll also appreciate the beautiful pollinator-friendly pink flowers and foliage it reveals each spring, brightening up your landscape in a splendor-filled show that the whole neighborhood will love!

Growers love the fairly early harvest season of the sweet Flavor Delight Aprium®, with fruits coming on strong early in the season. Growers in all marginal Apricot areas have found success with this cross that grows well in USDA planting zones 6 to 11. Once you get just a taste or two of the ripened end product, you'll see that they're worth the effort!

If you're like many folks and space is an issue, then this semi-dwarf tree is right for you, since they're around three-fourths the size of standard Apricot varieties! Because they are self-fruitful, they need no pollinators, but you can grow this tree alongside other Apricot or Plum fruit trees for increased pollination and yields if desired!

Planting and Application:

The zesty zip of the Apricot is tempered down just a bit by the Plum's sweetness, making for an interesting and addictive flavor combination that the whole family can love. In fact, some connoisseurs even say it is one of the most flavorful of all the early summer fruits! Which is ideal for snacking, adding to fruit platters and salads, baked goods, or even making into jellies and jams.

Whereas the Pluot® leans more toward the Plum end of the flavor spectrum, the Aprium® gives a bigger Apricot punch along with the look and texture of the Apricot.

The trees double as flowering spring ornamentals, lush shade throughout the summers, and a touch of fall color, make Aprium® trees lovely edible landscaping plants! Enjoy both front and backyard gardens and orchards anywhere you have the sun!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Fruit trees need full sun, at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day, to flower and therefore fruit the best. Choose an area with good air circulation in well-drained, enriched soil, with a 3-4 inch deep layer of arborist mulch over the root system. Water new installations regularly and do not let them dry out. Aprium® fruits the best when provided with regular moisture access when it's hot or there’s less rainfall or drought.

Prune these trees to maintain an open canopy for sunlight penetration and good airflow in the late winter or early spring. You can summer prune to maintain size and shape, or to remove suckers and water growth.

These trees are easy to grow and have similar needs as Apricot trees, requiring minimal maintenance, making them a virtually carefree addition to your property! Plant them this season and you'll be enjoying your first harvest in as little as three years!

Popular Sweet Flavor Delight Aprium

The Flavor Delight Aprium continues to prove itself a #1 fruit choice. From its introduction as a low chill, zone 9-11 selection, the Flavor Delight has begun to extend its success to protected pockets of zones 6-8 with a reputation for heavy production and wonderful flavor.

Flavor Delight© was created by world-famous hybridist Floyd Zaiger as a cross between species in the late 1970's. The selections that were used in the cross were numbered Plum x Apricot hybrids varieties. Out of these original crosses, several seedlings were selected to move forward.

In 1983, what would become the Flavor Delight Aprium© was one of those seedlings selected for further evaluation. It would be almost another 10 years before the variety was named, patented, and introduced as one of the first Apricot x Plums favoring the Apricot.

The few Pluot varieties (Plum x Apricots favoring the Plum) already released were becoming well known when the Flavor Delight Aprium was introduced in 1990. It became a fast hit with the home gardeners in the low-chill areas of Southern California right away. These are areas where Apricots traditionally do not set well, or the varieties that work are not very flavorful.

Commercial attention was a little slower coming. Because of the fine flavor of the Flavor Delight Aprium© and its adaptability to lower chill climates in the central valley of California the commercial Jam producers were the first to look at the variety.

Commercially, it could be harvested at 18 brix, a sugar rating used for fruit. At that time most commercial Apricots could not get 10 to 12 brix when commercially ready for harvest. For the home garden, when fully ripe the Flavor Delight is up to 22+ brix.

Over time, the popularity of Apricots commercially has diminished, but in the home garden it remains as popular as ever. Anyone in a marginal climate for apricots is always looking for a variety that will produce. The Flavor Delight Aprium© is proving to be at least adaptable to the cold of a zone 6 and in some more protected locations and still fruiting well. Only time and experiment will set the limits on this relatively new and exciting Interspecific hybrid fruit.

Leafed out quickly last May. Still in Winter dormancy as of Mid April.

I planted Flavor Delight late May 2008. Because I orderd so late in the Season and had it delivered to my Phoenix AZ Work address where it is warm, the Flavor Delight arrved in the Box already starting to Leaf out. I was a bit concerned. I planted the Tree in Lakeside, AZ Elevation is 6,800 and has a very late Frost date. Within a few days of Planting, The Tree finished Leafing out. As of 4/13/09, The Tree has not come out of this years winter dormancy. It did snow yesterday in the White Mountians(Northeastern AZ? , So I think it is stil a few weeks away from blooming. I am looking fiorward to the Fruit in future years.
