Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: For the best pink berry color and high sugar content, plant in full sun for at least 6 to 8 hours daily. While it can handle light afternoon shade, less sun typically results in fewer flowers and a leggy growth habit.
  • Soil: These bushes require highly acidic soil with a pH between 4.5 and 5.5 to thrive. If you have heavy clay, plant in a raised bed or incorporate peat moss and elemental sulfur to lower the pH and improve drainage.

Watering Requirements

Keep the soil consistently moist like a wrung-out sponge during the first two growing seasons to help the root system settle. Once established, the Pink Lemonade Blueberry is moderately drought-tolerant, but inconsistent watering during fruit set will cause the berries to shrivel or drop early. Aim for one inch of water per week, delivered at the base of the plant to keep the foliage dry.

Pruning Tips

This variety produces fruit on one-year-old wood, so it is best to prune in late winter while the plant is still dormant. Remove about a quarter of the oldest, grey-colored canes each year to encourage vigorous new stems that will bear the most fruit. Think of this like a "youth treatment" that prevents the center of the bush from becoming a tangled mess of unproductive wood.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply an acidic fertilizer, such as one labeled for Azaleas or Camellias, in early spring just as the leaf buds begin to swell. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer because this forces tender new growth that won't have time to harden off before the first frost. A layer of pine bark mulch around the base will also help maintain acidity and moisture levels naturally.

Pink Blueberries? Yes! The Pink Lemonade Blueberry Bush (Vaccinium 'Pink Lemonade') is a delightful ornamental edible Blueberry with bright pink fruit! Featuring all the qualities and hardiness of a typical Rabbiteye Blueberry bush, but with a long-lasting harvest of summer and fall specialty fruit!

Petite, bell-shaped flowers will be your first surprise when the delicate, pink-hued blooms appear in spring. Their light fragrance will call to pollinators, enhancing your experience with the butterflies and bees that come in for a visit. Blueberry bushes are special in that they not only produce delicious fruit but are also beneficial as an ornamental shrub and a deciduous, fruit-bearing bush!

Pink Lemonade will fill out nicely for summer into a vase-like shape. Its silver-blue and serrated, lanceolate leaves blanket the arching limbs, creating a lovely silhouette for your landscape. As summer progresses, tiny green berries will appear, slowly transitioning to white, then light pink, and finally the dark pink that indicates they're ready for a taste!

Planting and Application:

Your Pink Lemonade Blueberry will amaze you with its versatility. Several of these would look outstanding at the back of your perennial bed, along a foundation or even plant just one in your garden for a summer treat. Save space and pot one up in a large planter!

When autumn is upon you, you'll revel in the orange-red coloring of the leaves that is the final ornamental step before the leaves drop to reveal the yellow-red twig color underneath. So go ahead and use these as 4 season foundation plantings, hedgerows for privacy and wildlife shelter, (those nosy neighbors won't mind) or as a dual-purpose specimen planting screening off your front yard from the street.

  • Exceptional Pinkish Fruit
  • Ornamental Year-Round Interest
  • Wildlife & Pollinator Interest
  • Darling White Bell-Shaped Blossoms
  • Compact Privacy, Specimen & Hedges

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Pink Lemonade Blueberry bushes are compact growers with lower cold requirements than most blueberries, and it's relatively easy-care and pest-free! Preferring full sun and acidic soil and although self-fertile, will perform best with other blueberries planted nearby.

  • Full Sun
  • Moderate Moisture & Well-Drained Acidic Soil
  • Mulch the Root Zone Well
  • Prune When Dormant
  • 200 Chill Hours

You can't go wrong with Pink Lemonade Blueberry Bushes at NatureHills.com! The cancer-fighting antioxidant properties of the fruit is reason alone to have one, but the ornamental qualities and special features of this unique shrub make it a must-have!
