Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment

Growing Zones 9-10
The first variegated purple Fountain Grass from Proven Winners® Graceful Grasses®! Fireworks Pennisetum Grass (Pennisetum setaceum 'Fireworks') is the first Purple Fountain Grass that is more than just purple. 'Fireworks' breaks color barriers with a deep maroon-purple center vein flanked by hot pink margins. The effect is a shockingly bright color in your garden from a typically simple grass.
Sometimes known as Red Fountain Grass, Fireworks bring deep beautiful colors wherever you plant them, even in containers! It holds its color all season long, even deep into the fall. In late summer it will shoot up soft, fluffy 'foxtails' blooms that will add even greater interest. The seedheads remain for winter interest, rounding out all four seasons with unique interest.
Growing just 2-3 feet in height when in bloom, and spreading just 24 inches wide, this cool-season ornamental perennial grass lives up to its name and creates a mounding, arching cascading form. This perennial ornamental grass thrives throughout USDA growing zones 9-10 and is wonderfully easy for any level of gardener to grow!
Planting and Application:
Use this fine-textured and colorful Fountain Grass to add texture and dimension to your perennial beds and borders! It looks great with prairie-style companions like Coreopsis or Rudbeckia come to mind! Or in modern gardens where it makes an unforgettable statement planted in masses!
The size of this ornamental grass makes it ideal for containers and small-space gardening applications! Light up the sun garden with a focal point pop of color, or use Graceful Grasses® Fireworks in specimen groupings of these amazing grasses. Light up the rock garden, and add graceful flowing texture to mailbox plantings and around the sunny patio in the ground or a planter. Northern growers can use Pennisetum as high-impact annual accents in their outdoor porch containers in the sun for seasonal bursts of color!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Treat Fireworks like you would any Ornamental Grass, shearing it down to the ground in late fall or early spring. This is a tough perennial grass that is easy to care for. Drought and disease don't bother it once it is established and salt air doesn't even phase it. If you live near the coast, Fireworks will grow without the need to coddle them. Prune these warm-season grasses in the early spring and give them some time while they get growing once temperatures are just right.
- Full Sun & Part Shade
- Widely Adaptable to Most Well-Drained Soil
- Warm-Season Grass
- Deer Resistant
- Drought, Heat & Humidity Tolerant
- Prune & Clean Mound in Early Spring
