Gorgeous, but be careful about Mature Height and Span

This is easily one of the most beautiful "bushes" on my property, but left unchecked, our bushes grew to 12+ feet tall and wide. It could be because they were perfectly placed in the path of our downspout, but so were other bushes (boxwood, barberry and some grasses). And yes, they have great motion in a light breeze and beautiful coloring. We're definitely going to plant new bushes, but in an area that we can easily reach for trimming.

Hi Jim,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your thoughtful and detailed feedback! It sounds like these bushes have brought a striking grace and movement to your yard, which is wonderful to hear. You make an excellent point about the mature height and spread—while their impressive size and ease in a breezy spot make for a lovely effect, they definitely need to be planted in locations where regular trimming is manageable. It’s great that you're planning to add more plants in spots that are easier to reach for maintenance.

If you ever want personalized pruning tips or recommendations for more compact varieties suited to your space near downspouts, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We’d be delighted to help you find the perfect additions that keep your garden both beautiful and manageable! Additionally, our care guides and pruning resources on the site might provide helpful insights.

Hi Jim,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughtful and detailed feedback! We’re delighted to hear how stunning your bushes have become and appreciate your candor about their vigorous growth. It sounds like they’ve truly flourished, perhaps influenced by their placement near the downspout as you noticed.

Your point about planting in more accessible locations to make trimming easier is excellent advice and something other gardeners will surely find helpful. For future plantings, we encourage checking out our plant sizing guides and care instructions available on our site to help plan for mature height and spread more comfortably. Beautiful!!!!!

This has to be the "happiest" plant in my agarden. With its reaching foliage that is varigated in pinks and greens, it is saying "look at me". It is a very beautiful focal point in my garden and brings pleasure and smiles from everyone who sees it. Allow for room as it will display better if not crowded.

Beautiful

Our tree is about 5'. It grows 4-5' every year. In early spring when we trim the fruit trees we trim the dappled willow back to the nubs to enjoy the beautiful color of new growth. We have a small yard so keeping it contained is a must. I am looking at how to weave the living trees into an arbor.

Hello Yorkxan,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with your Dappled Willow! It’s fantastic to hear how well it’s thriving and that the new spring growth brings such stunning color to your landscape. Your practice of pruning it back to the nubs to manage its size in a small yard is an excellent approach, helping maintain both health and beauty—a thoughtful touch for any garden.

Your idea of weaving your living trees into an arbor sounds truly inspiring and would create a charming, natural feature in your space. To support that vision, you might find it helpful to look into living trellis or vine-support tactics that gently guide young branches without restricting growth. Here at NatureHills, we also recommend occasional soft pruning during the growing season to keep the canopy manageable and encourage dense branching suitable for weaving.

If you’d like, we can suggest some guides on living arbors or even complementary plants that would pair wonderfully with your Dappled Willow to create an inviting and lush green structure. Please feel free to reach out anytime!

Dear Yorkxan,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with your Dappled Willow! It's wonderful to hear how well your tree is thriving, especially with that impressive 4-5 feet of growth each year. Your strategy of trimming it right down to the nubs in early spring to enjoy the vibrant new growth color is a fantastic approach—your tree must be showing off its best colors time and again.

We love your idea of weaving living trees into an arbor; it sounds like a creative and beautiful project! As you plan this, you might find it helpful to look into traditional espalier techniques or natural arbor weaving resources, which can offer guidance on shaping multiple trunks while supporting healthy growth and structure. Sturdy supports and gentle training over time can help your Dappled Willows form that enchanting living framework you're envisioning.

If you ever want more detailed pruning advice or plant shaping tips, feel free to reach out—our experts are always happy to lend a hand.

Everyone should have this bush.

My first dappled willow is now approx 10 feet tall X 10 feet wide. It is so gorgeous....I had to have more. Last year I planted 2 more and this year I planted 3 more. The two I planted last year really looked bad this spring but boy was I wrong - they took off like gang busters. I haven't pruned any of them and probably won't. I'm taking all my queues from the original one and have found them to be self-sufficient. I'm keeping them watered in the heat we are having just to give them a good start.

Hello Cindy,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with dappled willows! We’re delighted to hear that your original tree has flourished so beautifully and inspired you to expand your collection. It’s fascinating how your younger willows surprised you this spring by bouncing back so vigorously—nature truly has its own amazing rhythms.

It sounds like you’ve found a great balance with minimal pruning and consistent watering during the heat, which is a fantastic approach. For even more success, when you do decide to prune in the future, doing so in late winter or early spring can help maintain shape and promote healthy growth. Also, consider mulching around the base to retain moisture and protect roots during warmer months.

If you ever want tips on soil nutrition or controlling pests naturally, we're here to help you keep your willows thriving just like your original apartment-sized marvel. Thanks again for your thoughtful feedback—we love hearing stories like yours!

Hello Cindy,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with your dappled willows! It’s truly heartwarming to hear how your original tree has flourished into such a magnificent, self-sufficient beauty, and that your subsequent plantings are thriving as well. Your decision to let them grow naturally without pruning clearly shows great instinct, and it’s fantastic that keeping them watered during the heat has helped support their strong growth.

If you ever feel curious about subtle pruning techniques to maintain or shape your willows in the future, we’d be happy to offer some tips. Also, monitoring for pests or diseases occasionally can keep those bushes looking their very best as they mature. Meanwhile, continuing to provide consistent water during hot spells will certainly keep them happy and lush.

Thank you again for your glowing endorsement—like you said, truly “everyone should have this bush”! We love knowing that these beautiful trees have found a wonderful home in your garden. Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or stories about your gardening journey.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does dappled willow lose leaves in winter?

  • Yes, dappled willow is deciduous and drops its leaves in fall. After the variegated foliage falls, you'll enjoy the coral and red winter stems that provide excellent cold-season interest. The colorful bark display makes this shrub attractive year-round.

Are dappled willows evergreen?

  • No, dappled willows are deciduous shrubs that lose their leaves in winter. They compensate with attractive coral and red stems that provide excellent winter interest against the bare landscape. Prune in late winter before new growth emerges for best spring color display.

Are dappled willow deer resistant?

  • Dappled willow is not considered deer resistant and may be browsed by deer, especially when other food sources are scarce. The tender variegated foliage can be particularly appealing to wildlife. Consider planting in areas with less deer pressure or use deterrent methods if deer browsing is a concern in your landscape.

Can dappled willow grow in shade?

  • Dappled willow performs best in full sun to partial shade, where it develops the most vibrant variegated coloring. In deep shade, the distinctive pink, cream, and green leaf variegation becomes less pronounced. For optimal color display, plant where it receives at least 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily.

What is the mature size of a dappled willow?

  • Dappled willow typically reaches 4-6 feet tall and wide at maturity, though it can grow larger if left unpruned. Its loose, slightly weeping form creates an elegant arching silhouette. You can keep it much smaller by pruning back to a few inches from the ground each spring, making it versatile for any space. Shop at Nature Hills for this adaptable shrub.

Can dappled willows be planted near water pipes?

  • Dappled willows should not be planted near water pipes due to their aggressive root system that seeks moisture. Like most willows, they can cause expensive damage to plumbing and septic systems. Plant at least 25-30 feet away from any underground utilities.
