Description
A Doublefile Viburnum That Actually Delivers Twice
If you have ever admired the graceful horizontal layers of a doublefile viburnum but did not have the space for one, Steady Eddy® Doublefile Viburnum (Viburnum plicatum f. tomentosum 'NCVP1') was bred with your garden in mind. Developed by Dr. Tom Ranney at North Carolina State University and introduced through the Proven Winners® ColorChoice program, this compact cultivar grows just 4-5 feet tall and wide, roughly half the footprint of conventional varieties like Mariesii, while actually improving on bloom performance.
Two Seasons of White Blooms
The show starts in late spring when flat-topped flower clusters appear in tidy rows along each horizontal branch. The blooms are bright white, arranged in the classic lacecap style with small fertile flowers at the center and larger sterile flowers ringing the outside. What sets Steady Eddy® apart from most doublefile viburnums is what happens next: it comes back for a reliable second wave of blooms in midsummer, something its predecessor Summer Snowflake could not always be counted on to deliver. Gardeners who grow both side by side consistently note that Steady Eddy® blooms with more density and consistency.
Four Seasons of Interest
Spring blooms give way to glossy, deeply veined dark green foliage that holds its good looks through summer. The horizontal branching habit creates a layered, almost tiered silhouette that gives the shrub an architectural quality even when it is not in flower. In fall, the foliage shifts to a striking purplish-burgundy before dropping. Birds are attracted to small red fruits that develop in late summer and deepen in color through the season. There is something worth noticing on this plant from April through November.
Where It Fits in the Landscape
Steady Eddy® works naturally as a specimen plant, where its strong structure can be appreciated from multiple angles. It also excels in mixed shrub borders alongside companions like spirea, weigela, or ornamental grasses that share its preference for sun and average moisture. Because it stays compact, it is a sensible choice for foundation plantings where oversized shrubs often become a maintenance problem. The cut branches are long-lasting in arrangements and the foliage adds texture as a filler.
This is the kind of shrub that earns its place in the garden without asking much in return. Plant it, water it through its first season, and let it do the rest.
