Disappointed

My Summer Wine Ninebark is officially dead. Too bad because it initially looked great between two other shrubs I planted in our revised front of the house look. By the way, the other shrubs are doing great.

Disappointed with my 3rd order from Nature Hills

This my third time ordering from Nature Hills. The plants in my first two orders were beautiful and are doing well. The Ninebark in my third order was a disappointment. Despite being in large containers one of them had very little in the way of a root ball. The other was somewhat better but still not the size I would have expected. I'm not sure the one is going to survive, but we'll see.

Beautiful Plant

Summer Wine Ninebark really does have some of the best foliage color you can find in a shrub, so it's great to hear yours arrived in good shape. It should put on a nice show each season as it fills in. Thanks for sharing, Marcia. The Nature Hills Team

I ordered four of these with double purple flowers and love them . When they arrived in qt. containers them were about 4 inches tall. By the end of the summer, they were 4 feet tall and full of gorgeous blooms. Best purchase ever!

Beautiful

Very colorful shrub. Mine is only 2 years old and has grown from a small container to over 30''in. tall and 30''in wide with just over 6hrs full sun a day. Didn't expect it with the very clay soil I have in my Iowa lawn.If the first year doesn't display colors very well, don't give up on it. It is ''WELL WORTH'' the wait.My only regret.... is that I didn't buy two.

Hi Bow,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with the First Editions® Amber Jubilee™ Ninebark! We’re delighted to hear that your shrub has thrived so beautifully, especially given the challenges of your clay soil and limited sunshine in Iowa. Your patience really paid off, and it’s fantastic to know those vibrant tones have appeared after a bit of time.

If you ever decide to expand your landscape with another Ninebark—or add companion plants that adore similar conditions—consider integrating some organic matter into your soil to help drainage and nutrient availability. Mulching can also keep your roots protected and soil temperature steady, which your shrubs will appreciate.

We appreciate your enthusiasm and feedback immensely! Don’t hesitate to reach out whenever you want tips on soil care, pruning, or picking plants that compliment your flourishing garden.

Wishing you happy planting,

Hello Bow-Legged Snake,

Thank you so much for sharing your lovely experience with your First Editions® Amber Jubilee™ Ninebark! We’re thrilled to hear how well your shrub has grown, especially given Iowa’s challenging clay soil and only about 6 hours of full sun daily. Your patience and care have truly paid off, and we love how you mentioned it’s 'WELL WORTH' the wait—such valuable insight for fellow gardeners!

Your success is a great reminder that sometimes plants need an extra season to really reveal their best. For your clay soil, ensuring good drainage with some organic matter like compost or shredded leaf mulch can further encourage healthy rooting and vibrant colors. If you do decide to get another, companion plantings nearby can provide an added horticultural harmony.

Thanks again for your candid and encouraging review. We hope your garden continues to flourish and brings you ongoing enjoyment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What USDA hardiness zones is Amber Jubilee™ Ninebark suitable for?

  • Amber Jubilee™ Ninebark thrives in USDA hardiness zones 3-7, making it suitable for most northern and temperate regions. This cold-hardy shrub handles harsh winters well while providing four-season interest. Choose a sunny location for the best foliage color development.

What is the mature size (height and width) of Amber Jubilee™ Ninebark?

  • Amber Jubilee™ Ninebark reaches 4-6 feet tall and wide at maturity, forming a compact, rounded shrub perfect for smaller spaces. This medium-sized shrub works well as a focal point or in mixed borders where you need reliable four-season interest.

Does Amber Jubilee™ Ninebark come in tree form or only shrub form?

  • Amber Jubilee™ Ninebark is only available as a shrub, not in tree form. This medium-sized deciduous shrub maintains an upright, rounded growth habit rather than developing a single trunk like a tree. Look for it in the shrub section when shopping for this colorful landscape addition.

What are the planting instructions for Amber Jubilee™ Ninebark, including soil type and sun requirements?

  • Plant Amber Jubilee™ Ninebark in full sun to partial shade in well-draining soil. This adaptable shrub tolerates various soil types and transplants easily. Space plants 4-6 feet apart to accommodate its rounded, upright form at maturity.

How do I prune Amber Jubilee™ Ninebark to maintain its shape?

  • Prune Amber Jubiele™ Ninebark in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. Remove up to one-third of the oldest canes at ground level to maintain the upright, rounded form. Light shaping cuts can be made after flowering. Find quality specimens at naturehills.com.

Is Amber Jubilee™ Ninebark deer resistant?

  • Amber Jubilee™ Ninebark is generally deer resistant due to its tough, textured foliage and membership in the rose family. While no plant is completely deer-proof, ninebarks are rarely browsed by deer in most regions. Plant it in areas where deer pressure is moderate to high for best results.

What are the watering requirements after planting Amber Jubilee™ Ninebark?

  • Water deeply twice weekly for the first month after planting, then reduce to once weekly during the first growing season. This low-maintenance shrub is quite drought tolerant once established. Check soil moisture by inserting your finger 2 inches deep before watering.

Will Amber Jubilee™ Ninebark grow well in clay soil or high pH/alkaline soil?

  • Amber Jubilee™ Ninebark tolerates clay soil and alkaline conditions well, making it adaptable to challenging sites. This hardy shrub is quite forgiving of poor drainage and higher pH levels. For best results, ensure decent drainage even in clay by adding organic matter when planting.

How is Amber Jubilee™ Ninebark shipped, and does it fit in a standard box?

  • Amber Jubilee™ Ninebark ships as a bare root or potted plant depending on season and availability. This compact shrub typically fits in standard shipping boxes due to its manageable size. Check your specific order for exact shipping method and expected plant size upon arrival.

Are there any common pests or diseases like leaf spot or fire blight affecting Amber Jubilee™ Ninebark?

  • Amber Jubilee™ Ninebark is naturally pest-resistant and rarely suffers from serious disease issues. This hardy shrub's robust nature makes it less susceptible to common problems like leaf spot or fire blight. Plant in well-draining soil with good air circulation to prevent any potential fungal issues.
