Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Give your False Sunflower at least six full hours of direct sun daily; anything less means fewer blooms and duller foliage color. While it tolerates a little afternoon shade, the stunning red tones of the new growth and the bright flower count will be significantly reduced.
  • Soil: This plant is wonderfully adaptable, but it truly thrives in average, well-drained soil. If you have heavy clay, mixing in plenty of coarse compost and a bit of grit will prevent soggy roots; for very sandy spots, the compost will help retain essential moisture.

Watering Requirements

For the first growing season, keep the soil consistently moist to help your plant establish a strong root system, aiming for about an inch of water weekly. Once mature, Heliopsis is quite drought-tolerant, which makes it a fantastic workhorse for the summer garden. If watering is erratic during a heatwave, you will see general plant stress and a noticeable decrease in bloom size and frequency.

Pruning Tips

This perennial blooms reliably on new wood, making pruning straightforward. The best time to prune is a technique called the "Chelsea Chop," where you shear the entire plant back by one-third around late May or early June. This promotes a denser, bushier form, prevents the stems from flopping over in late summer, and encourages a robust, extended bloom period.

Fertilizer Needs

Burning Hearts False Sunflower is not a heavy feeder and often performs best with just a top dressing of rich compost applied in early spring. If your soil is poor, apply a light, balanced granular fertilizer, like a 10-10-10 formula, as the new growth emerges. What to avoid: Skip the temptation to use high-nitrogen lawn fertilizer, as this will result in weak, floppy stems and excessive, lush green foliage instead of sturdy stems covered in bright, beautiful flowers.
