Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Provide 4 to 6 hours of morning sun with dappled afternoon shade. While sun exposure keeps the foliage a deep burgundy, intense afternoon heat in warmer climates can scorch the delicate lace-like leaf tips.
  • Soil: Select a spot with well-drained, slightly acidic soil rich in organic material. If you have heavy clay, plant the root ball in a slight mound above the soil line to prevent the roots from sitting in a "bathtub" of stagnant water.

Watering Requirements

During the first two years, give your maple a deep soak twice a week to help the root system settle. Mature trees have moderate drought tolerance, but inconsistent watering often results in "leaf fry" where the edges of the foliage turn brown and crispy. Use a thick layer of mulch around the base to maintain even moisture levels throughout the heat of summer.

Pruning Tips

Prune your tree in late winter while it is still dormant to maintain its cascading, waterfall-like shape. Focus on removing dead wood or branches that rub against each other, as these "crossers" can create wounds that invite disease. Think of pruning as a light thinning to improve airflow and show off the artistic structure of the trunk.

Fertilizer Needs

Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring before the new leaves fully unfurl. Avoid applying high-nitrogen fertilizers after mid-summer because they stimulate tender new growth that cannot harden off before winter. This soft growth is highly susceptible to frost damage, which can weaken the overall health of the tree.

For an incredible experience, try the gorgeous Inaba Shidare (Acer Palmatum var. dissectum 'Inaba Shidare') in your landscape. You'll instantly recognize the deep color and delicate, dissected leaf shape as a Japanese Maple. But this lace-leaf Maple has delicate-looking leaves on graceful branches.

Don't let the airy disposition of Inaba Shidare fool you, though. This is a strong grower with an upright, straight trunk and downturned, spreading branches that seem to tell a romantic story. It grows beautifully in the ground, or in containers.

Landscapers usually select this special accent Japanese Maple tree for its beautiful, weeping habit. The Inaba Shidare has one of the best presentations of all the Japanese Maples.

With an upright structure and broad cascading limbs, this tree offers truly limitless landscape value. It's absolutely stunning. You'll also be pleased to know that it's a fast grower that will quickly establish itself in your yard.

It explodes in the spring with leaves that are such a deep reddish-purple scarlet they almost appear black. After that, they only get more brilliant through the year and do not bronze in the heat of the later part of the summer.

When fall finally comes, the cold weather makes the leaves a bright fiery red rivaling all other fall color foliage. What a show!

How to Use Inabe Shidare Japanese Maple in the Landscape

One of the quickest and easiest ways to raise the curb appeal and the value of your home is to add beautiful and interesting new landscaping. This is a perfect tree to place next to a pond, along a dry creek bed or water garden for a designer look. They make a wonderful accent tree for entryways.

Use them as focal points in a Meditation Garden, or placed in a formal, Japanese-style garden. Plant near your patio to gaze upon in wonder.

Inaba Shidare is also the ideal container plant either on the patio or as a container specimen in the landscape.

#ProPlantTips for Care

Inaba Shidare requires good drainage and does best when planted in acid soils rich in organic matter. A pH of 6 - 6.5 is perfect.

Improve your soil when planting with the Dr. Earth Acid Lovers Organic Planting Mix. Mix in 50% planting mix to the total volume of soil replaced when planting. To maintain a lower pH, fertilize with Dr. Earth Acid Lovers Organic and Natural Premium Fertilizer.

When faced with poorly draining soils, plant the Inaba Shidare on a mound at least 18 inches high. This will ensure oxygen gets to the root system. Mulch the mound to keep the root cool and cut down on erosion.

Inaba Shidare does well in part shade to full sun, but needs protection from the afternoon sun in the warmer climates. Mulch to 2 feet outside of the canopy and 3 to 4 inches deep to keep the root both cool and moist by decreasing evaporation.

The growth rate is outstanding. These 3-year-old trees are shipped strong and healthy. Plant them and keep them well-watered and they will grow fast - 1-2 feet a year for the first few years. The tree will double in size in 5 years!

Inaba Shidare responds well to pruning, and you can keep this easy-care tree any size you like. You'll enjoy the best results if you schedule the pruning task for either winter or summer.

You love the striking color from spring to fall and truly appreciate that stunning form all year round. Order today at NatureHills.com!
