Where to Plant

Sunlight: Give this tree at least six hours of direct sunlight every day to maintain its dense needle growth and signature silvery-green color. While it can survive in partial shade, the branches will become thin and the tree will lose its graceful, full appearance.
Soil: These trees prefer well drained soil and can struggle in spots where water pools after a rain. If you have heavy clay, mix in some organic matter or plant the tree on a slight mound to ensure the roots do not sit in constant moisture.

Watering Requirements

During the first two growing seasons, water your tree deeply twice a week to help the root system reach deep into the ground. Once established, the Deodar Cedar is notably drought tolerant and generally only requires supplemental water during extreme summer heat. If the tree becomes overly stressed from thirst, you may notice the needles turning a dull yellow or dropping prematurely.

Pruning Tips

This conifer requires very little maintenance, but any necessary shaping should be done in early spring before the new growth starts. this is one of the best trees for kentucky

the deodar cedar grows very well in western and south central kentucky. It will grow to 135 ft tall there. in louisville the northern limit it will grow to 80 ft tall. this is also one of the most common cedars in the state of kentucky. this is one of my favorite trees.
