Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: For the best flower display and tightest growth, plant Petit Bleu™ in full sun, which means at least 6 hours of direct light daily. While it can tolerate a bit of afternoon shade, less sun usually results in floppy stems and fewer of those signature blue blooms.
  • Soil: This shrub thrives in loose, well-drained soil and will struggle in "wet feet" or heavy clay. If your soil is thick and holds water, mix in some organic compost or plant it in a slightly raised mound to ensure the roots stay dry and healthy.

Watering Requirements

During its first year, water your Bluebeard twice a week to help the root system settle into its new home. Once established, this plant is quite drought-tolerant and only needs supplemental water during long dry spells. Inconsistent watering or overly soggy soil can lead to root rot, so it is better to lean on the side of underwatering rather than overwatering once the plant is mature.

Pruning Tips

Petit Bleu™ blooms on new wood, so the best time for a "haircut" is in early spring just as the new green buds begin to appear. Cut the entire plant back to about 6 to 12 inches above the ground to encourage a flush of fresh, vigorous growth and a neater shape. This hard pruning prevents the shrub from becoming woody or sparse in the center and ensures a massive crop of late-summer flowers.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as the new growth starts to emerge. Avoid using high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer, as this encourages soft growth that won't have time to harden off before the first frost. A single application of a general-purpose garden food is usually all this low-maintenance shrub needs to power through the blooming season.
