Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment

Growing Zones
The Phantom Dahlia (Dahlia 'The Phantom') is a gorgeous blooming ornamental with deep pink petals streaked in a cherry skirt and a round pompom-like center of tightly packed petals in peachy orange and dark pink!
Dahlia blooms almost continually all growing season! Rising on strong stems with multiple blooms, each vying for its turn to open and take the spotlight, these two-tone blossoms soar above a mound of glossy tender-looking green foliage that looks great all on its own!
The Phantom can be grown and enjoyed in all growing zones as annual accents or perennial bulbs that need to be "lifted" in the fall before the ground freezes. Store these bulbs in a cool, dark place for the winter. Gardeners in USDA growing zones 8 and up can enjoy these plants as perennials that can stay in the ground year-round without needing to be dug up.
Landscape Application:
The Phantom Dahlia is a fantastic specimen when planted all on their own, reaching 24-48 inches tall and can form basal mounds 12-36 inches wide (the size variance depends on the age and size of the bulb and growing conditions). Adding Dahlias to a garden bed or large planter creates a brilliant focal point in your garden!
No perennial bed, cut flower border, or proper English Cottage garden should be without these magnificent extended-bloom flowers! You will also enjoy a long blooming season for cut flowers and bouquets with these unique layered flowers! When included in a Pollinator garden, Dahlia becomes a vivid landing pad for pollinators and Hummingbirds!
- Pink & Cherry-Red Outer Petals & Pom-Pom of Pink/Peach Center

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Plant your Dahlia tubers in full-sun areas of your garden. The morning sun is best due to its drying power to clear the leaves of dew. Dahlia foliage also appreciates very good air circulation!
The key to successfully growing Dahlias is well-enriched soil with regular fertilizer. Once the plants are established, it is recommended you add mulch to conserve consistent soil moisture and protect the roots.
Even though they are often referred to as 'bulbs' the roots of this plant are tubers (like potatoes) and sprout from their 'eyes' and have shallow roots. Plant Dahlia tubers between 10-12 inches deep in loosened, enriched soil These modified roots need to be planted in very well-drained soil that won't become soggy. Tubers planted directly in the ground will start to sprout in about 3 weeks depending on your climate and weather.
- Full Sun & Partial Shade
- Well-Drained Soil
- Tolerates Moderate to Moist Locations
- Prune After Foliage Yellows & Lift Tubers In Fall
- Easy To Grow Tubers
