Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Growing Zones
Big burgundy cactus-style Dahlia, the Tamburo Dahlia (Dahlia 'Tamburo') is a bold and dark-flowered perennial tuber that can grow tall and showy throughout your sun gardens and planters! The slender petals are full and neatly arranged into a spikey pom-pom of burgundy maroon!
The glossy foliage looks great on its own but once the 36-48 inch tall flowering stems appear, the blooms keep popping until frost! The foliage clumps can form 1-3 feet wide at maturity depending on growing conditions and your growing zone.
Tamburo Dahlia grows as annual accents or seasonal flowers throughout all growing zones but can be perennial bulbs in frost-free growing zones. Simply lift the bulbs in the fall and keep them as you would Canna Lily or Caladiums and keep them in a cool dark place for the winter.
Landscape Application:
The dark blooms look fantastic in dark-flower gardens, and throughout your Cottage garden and mixed perennial border when combined with dark purple and burgundy foliaged plants, among near-black flowers and foliage perennials and shrubs, or mixed among deep blue and pink flowers! Or go bold by adding these dark blooms to chartreuse and gold gardens!
Tamburo Dahlia is ideal for back-of-the-border garden accents or in large planters as tall thrillers! These plants are fantastic focal point plants that add a big impact on your front yard landscaping beds - sure to attract all the attention of neighbors and local pollinators! Snip several blossoms for your bouquets indoors too!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Plant Dahlia tubers in full sun for the best growth and the most blooms! The morning sun is best due to its drying power to clear the leaves of dew. Delicate Dahlia foliage also appreciates very good air circulation! The key to successfully growing Dahlias is well-enriched soil with regular fertilizer. Once the plants are established, it is recommended you add mulch to conserve consistent soil moisture and protect the roots.
Even though they are often referred to as 'bulbs' the roots of this plant are tubers like potatoes and sprout from the 'eyes' of their shallow roots. Plant Dahlia tubers between 10-12 inches deep in loosened, enriched soil These modified roots need to be planted in very well-drained soil that won't become soggy. Tubers planted directly in the ground will start to sprout in about 3 weeks depending on your climate and weather.
Dahlia tubers in climates with freezing winters need to be "lifted" in the fall before the ground freezes solid. Store these bulbs in a cool, dark place for the winter.
