Planting & Care

Where to Plant

Sunlight: Rise Up® Amberness needs a minimum of six hours of direct sun each day. Less than that and you will see reduced flowering and weaker stems. A south or west-facing wall or fence is an ideal spot, especially one that radiates warmth.

Soil: Plant in moist, well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH. Avoid heavy clay that stays wet after rain, as prolonged soggy conditions will not be tolerated. If your soil is dense, work in compost and coarse grit before planting to improve structure and drainage.

Watering Requirements

Water deeply at the base of the plant two to three times per week during the first growing season to help the roots establish. Once settled in, weekly deep watering during dry spells is generally sufficient. Always water at the soil level rather than overhead to keep the foliage dry and reduce the risk of disease.

Pruning Tips

In early spring, just as new buds begin to swell on the stems, prune the entire plant back by at least one third of its total height. Make each cut just above a plump, healthy bud. If you are training it as a climber, guide new canes toward your trellis or support structure at this time. Deadheading is not required for continuous bloom, though removing spent clusters can tidy up the appearance.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a granular rose fertilizer in late winter or early spring when the soil becomes workable, and again in late spring to fuel the summer rebloom cycle. Follow the product label for application rates. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which push leafy growth at the expense of flowers and can make stems more susceptible to fungal issues.

Description

A Climbing Rose That Actually Works

Rise Up® Amberness (Rosa x 'ChewAmberness') is the kind of rose that makes you rethink everything you assumed this plant category required. Bred by renowned UK rose hybridizer Chris Warner and introduced through the Proven Winners® ColorChoice® program, this mini climber delivers wave after wave of deeply fragrant, amber-hued blooms from early summer right through fall, all without spraying, deadheading, or fussing.

The flowers themselves are something special. Apricot-orange buds unfurl into full, wavy amber blooms centered with golden stamens, and the fragrance is genuine and intense rather than faint or fleeting. Arranged in clusters on sturdy upright stems, the blooms make excellent cut flowers for indoor arrangements as well. Foliage is a clean, glossy deep green that holds up well against the common fungal problems that plague many rose varieties.

Flexible by Design

What sets Rise Up® Amberness apart from traditional climbing roses is its compact, manageable scale. At just 3-5 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide, it fits comfortably in spaces where a full-sized climber would overwhelm. Train it up a trellis, arbor, fence, or pillar for a vertical display, or skip the support structure entirely and allow it to grow as a rounded shrub in a mixed border or foundation planting. Either way, it keeps a tidy, dense habit that rarely needs heavy intervention.

Designed for Real Gardeners

This rose earns its spot in low-maintenance landscapes. Disease resistance is built in from the breeding program, which means less time worrying about black spot and powdery mildew. The continuous rebloom habit means you are not waiting for one big flush per season. Bees and butterflies are drawn to the flowers, adding movement and life to the garden throughout the growing months.

Whether you plant it near an outdoor seating area to catch the fragrance up close, use it to soften a fence line, or anchor a sunny cottage-style border, Rise Up® Amberness brings consistent, reliable color from the first warm days of early summer to the last light of fall.
