Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Growing Zones 5-8
Not your grandmother's Primrose! The two-tone spears of Vial's Primrose (Primula vialii) will take your garden beds to the next generation! The petunia-like blossoms of old have been replaced with fantastic wands of red buds with lilac blossoms forming pointed bottlebrushes that reach for the sky!
Vial's Primrose is backed by dense upright clumps of oval bright lemon-lime/chartreuse-green leaves and stems that just shine even when not in bloom! Also known as Redhot Poker Primrose and Orchid Primrose, these are delightful erect growing flowers suitable for containers, garden beds and edging or for a tall vase indoors!
Hardy throughout growing zones 5-8, this unique flowering perennial can get 12-18" tall when in flower and spread to around a foot or under. These tender perennials appreciate being planted among other plants, to shade the roots after the flowers fade in summer.
Planting and Application:
Moisture-loving plants, these are suitable for well-mulched garden beds, Rain and bog gardens and that soggy spot where the gutters drain, just as long as it's also well-drained and not stagnant. Provide mulched garden beds throughout your landscape - perennial and cottage gardens, cut flower beds and of course, pollinator borders where the bees and butterflies will frolic!
Don’t have a suitable garden bed for Vial's Primrose? Add to a planter or patio pot to be able to regulate the moisture in the soil with ease! Balcony gardens and raised beds around your front entry or a mailbox allow you to keep a smaller area well-watered without soaker hoses and lots of fuss! Woodland gardens, shade gardens and more!
- Dramatic Fragrant Blue Spires
- Aromatic Gray-Green Foliage
- Xeric & Adaptable
- Very Long Bloom Time
- Deer & Rabbit Resistant - Bee, Butterfly & Hummingbird Friendly!
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Primrose does best in full sun when planted in cooler climates and does appreciate afternoon shade when planted in the warmer of its growing zone range. Provide highly organic, moist, enriched soil that drained well and has a 3-4 inch thick layer of arborist mulch over the surface to hold in moisture and keep roots cool. Deadhead after the blooms fade or let naturalize freely.
