Large, cheery yellow blooms cover the tough, low-growing native subshrub known as the creeping St. John's Wort shrub (Hypericum calycinum). Now, this isn't the same variety as the one you see in health food stores, but rather a durable landscape asset that delivers bright yellow blooms up to three inches wide with a fluffy "pom-pom" of long, bushy stamens and reddish anthers sparkle in the sunlight.

The main flush of blooms for bees, butterflies, and beneficial pollinators, occurs in early summer, with sporadic reblooming all season long! Over the season, the spent blooms develop into showy seedpods that persist all fall and winter for interest. Creeping St. John's Wort, also known as Aaron's Beard, is low-maintenance enough for even beginning gardeners can have success with these charming, ground-hugging shrubs.

Glossy, oval leaves add a symmetrical precise look to these hard-working plants and remain evergreen in warm winters. Groundcover St. John's Wort spreads by underground stolons to suppress weeds on bare ground, forming tidy and cheerful colonies! Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 5 to 9, these shrubs grow 12 - 18 inches and spread to 18 - 24 inches wide. Watch for the foliage to develop purple tones if the nights in your area stay cool enough.

Planting and Application:

Use several to decorate a Rock Garden with a drape of happy color, or in Pollinator Gardens to attract bees and butterflies! It easily softens the base of your specimen boulders. Sunny and easy-care accents, these shrubs look great anywhere! If you have a wooded edge, St. John's Wort fits right in. Hypericum eases the transition between the lawn and the garden, as well as the woods, taming the wildness and filling an area with little rays of sunshine!

Where we can ship this beautiful St. John's Wort plant, it becomes a lively resource to decorate bare ground in the filtered sun under trees. It's tolerant of many conditions but does flower best in full sun. Partner with drifts of colorful Sumac shrubs and anchor with a cascading planting pattern of clustered shrubs for a valuable garden feature!

Mixed-shrub borders, the back garden bed, and informal hedges are perfect spots for St. Johns Wort to roam! Alternately, Hypericum brings a nice 'scruffiness' to a formal planting bed as well as fitting in perfectly in informal country borders. Either way, St. John's Wort compliments your style! The short, spreading form of these plants makes them perfect for erosion control, on steep slopes, and en masse. Need to fill an area with sunshine? Plant a few St. John's Wort and sit back and relax!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Plant 18 inches apart in well-drained soil and full sun for the best flowering display. St. John's Wort plant care does include partial shade, but make sure it will receive at least four hours of sunlight a day. Over time, they will develop moderate resistance to periodic drought. However, our team does recommend that you apply water as needed during hot, dry weather. In early spring, you can prune off any winter damage as needed.

A generous layer of mulch retains moisture and insulates the root system from heat and winter's chill. St. John's Wort blooms on new wood, so prune while dormant to control the size and shape however, these really do their best in locations where they're allowed to be themselves. Hypericum is deer and pest resistant, too.

  • Full Sun in Cooler Zones, Part Sun in Warmer Zones
  • Vigorous Growing Deciduous Flowering Shrub
  • Needs Well-Drained Soil & Moderate Moisture Needs
  • Prune When Dormant
  • Deer Seldom Bother It, Pest & Disease & Salt-Resistant
