Just like the dog it's named after, the Dalmatian Purple Foxglove (Digitalis x 'Dalmatian Purple') is known for its spots. Each individual rose-blushed purple, flared flower has dozens of dark freckles in its throat. One of the first to bloom, these flowers densely line the tall, erect spikes by the dozens! The more of these you plant, the more flower power you get!

The speckled throats act like a landing zone for hummingbirds, bees and butterflies! Even a few Hummingbirds are lured in by these dazzling clusters of vertical blooms! These biennials form a dense rosette of leafy green foliage at the base of the tall spires, which slowly bloom from the bottom up to the tip for a long-lasting display!

Foxgloves are biennial, so let the seeds fall and enjoy them year after year. Dalmatian Purple is wonderfully fast-growing and hardy throughout USDA growing zones 4 to 9 and can reach about 2-3 feet tall when in full bloom, and spread to about a foot wide. The Dalmatian Purple Foxglove is a classic biennial that performs best in rich, moist soil that is not too wet or too dry and prefers part shade, or mulched well in full sun. First-year plants are rosettes of foliage, and in the 2nd year, they bolt to produce these incredible blooms.

Planting and Application:

Gorgeous, large-scale cut flowers, it only takes a few Dalmatian Purple Foxglove stems to fill a vase with their long-lasting blooms. They take the stage in cutting gardens, pollinator borders, and perennial beds where they add their stately beauty and height to the mix! The tall plants are very architectural and give great structure along a fence or in the middle of a border.

These beauties are synonymous with cottage gardens in Europe and America! They look great in groups and clusters, as well as around a birdbath or behind a garden bench for a striking modern look. As pretty as they are in groups and borders, they also excel in large containers. Plant them with white blooming perennials for a formal look or with yellows and pinks for an old-fashioned feel.

  • Rosy Purple Architectural Blooms Full of Densely Packed Tubular Florets
  • Lush Green Rosettes of Foliage
  • Long Lasting Bloom Time
  • Pollinator Friendly & Outstanding Cut Flowers!
  • Cottage & Perennial Borders, Back of the Garden Specimens

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Digitalis is an easy-to-grow biennial and very adaptable to many conditions, but performs best in full to partial sun exposure, with well-drained soil. In areas where you have less sun or have strong winds, it is recommended to stake these tall blooms for support. Cover their roots with 3-4 inches of mulch to hold in moisture and insulate the roots and water consistently to keep those blooms happy and healthy! Do not let them dry out.

Always wear gloves when handling this plant. Foxglove can be deadheaded immediately after the bloom finishes for a possible rebloom later in the season. Some remove spent blooms immediately for a chance at rebloom. Most will prefer to let the plants produce seeds and allow them to drop to keep producing more new biennial plants. These classic plants the rabbits and Deer do not prefer.
