Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

If you've never grown Hypericum, also known as St. John's Wort, then you owe it to yourself to get First Editions® Cobalt-n-Gold™ Hypericum (Hypericum kalmianum 'PIIHYP-I' PP25,318) into your garden this year! This new Hypericum will give you a solid four seasons of truly interesting color and texture.
In the spring Cobalt-n-Gold™ starts out with a flush of silver-green foliage that quickly grows into a loose mound. Then, in late spring and early summer, it is covered in ¾" sunshine-yellow pincushion flowers. Each sunny bloom has a spray of golden sparks erupting from their centers and attracts loads of butterflies and bees to your garden!
In the fall the leaves transform into shades of red, orange, and yellow and berries appear that are perfect for fall floral arrangements. In winter the leaves drop to reveal stunning exfoliating bark that brings texture and depth to the short days. St. John's Wort makes itself right at home, even spreading out a little to form nice colonies! Cold-hardy throughout USDA growing zones 4 to 7 and grows into a tidy 2-3 feet in height and spreads to a sizeable 4-8 feet at maturity.
Planting and Application:
Besides being beautiful, St, John's Wort is also a beneficial herb. It has long been used as the main ingredient in teas, tinctures, and tonics to relieve everything from anxiety to inflammation. While we don't recommend using landscaping Hypercum medicinally, just the sunny blooms and the sheer amount of butterflies that arrive are sure to lift your spirits!
Once the flowers are gone the fluffy foliage softens and cools borders, beds, or living groundcover and flowering mulch! This spreading and politely suckering shrub is fantastic for erosion control, on steep slopes, and en masse. Need to fill an area with sunshine? Plant a few St. John's Wort accents and sit back and relax for the rest of the summer!
Cobalt-n-Gold™ is a natural in cut flower gardens! These lovelies are well-known and every florist is familiar with the botanical name 'Hypericum'. Those unique seed pods that appear in fall are glossy reddish-brown and so cool to use in fashionable floral bouquets! Or, leave them to their own devices in the landscape for wonderful winter interest!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Cobalt-n-Gold™ is a stunner all year. All it asks for is full sun and well-drained soil to be happy. St. John's Wort is not particular about soil pH levels and is particularly suited for urban conditions, pollution, etc. These are easy-care and prefer moist, rich, sandy loams and tolerate some drought. Deer seldom bother this plant! Apply a generous 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch to retain moisture and insulate the root system from heat and winter's chill. Prune while dormant to control the size and shape.
