Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Important Notes
Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season
- Specific varieties may have limited availability in certain sizes

Growing Zones
Amethyst wands for your garden, the Purple Magic Gladiolus (Gladiolus x hortulanus 'Purple Magic') is a vibrant vertical bloom full of lavender, purple, and violet tones that create a varied display in your sun garden!
Purple Magic Gladiolus casts a spell on your summer borders as the vivid blooms open from the bottom up and give you and your butterflies a long-lasting display! Fringed by sword-like green leaves that stand vertically around the upright flowers.
These summer-flowering bulbs, better known as corms, are reliable perennials but need to be lifted in the fall in colder growing zones. Try planting waves of corms 2 weeks apart to extend your bloom time and give you plenty of flowers for bees and bouquets!
Landscape Application:
Purple Magic Gladiolus is beautiful as solitary clusters that stand tall among your sunny garden beds and borders! Either in large plantings, rows, or en masse, Gladiolias look amazing when combined to amplify their vivid purple hues!
You don't need large displays to enjoy these incredible blooms because these space-saving bulbs add tall thrillers and showy focal points among your container gardens, front porch urns, and patio mixed planters in the sun! Even balcony gardeners can use these tall blooms as seasonal accents!
- Ruffled Lavender, Violet & Amethyst Upright Blooms
- Upright Sword-Shaped Green Foliage
- Long-Lasting Bloom Time
- Fantastic Cut Flowers & Pollinator-Friendly
- Specimens, Groupings, Container Thrillers, Focal Points & Mass Plantings
#ProPlantTips for Care:
Gladiolus are strongest in full sun in cooler growing zones but appreciate afternoon shade in hot growing zones. Any well-drained soil location works great. These bulbs do appreciate moderate yet regular moisture access and mulched beds.
Plant these corms in the spring about 6-8 inches deep. Groupings and rows have the biggest effect and impact on your garden, so plant your corms pointy side up about 5-6 inches apart.
Stake your flower wands unless you plant your Glads in a location protected from the wind. Deadhead as soon as the last flower fades but keep the greenery to make food for the bulb until they turn yellow.
Gladiola corms can grow as seasonal or annual accents in all USDA planting zones. However, gardeners in zones 8 to 10 can use these plants in the ground all year round as perennial accents! In zones 1 through 7, lift your corms as you would Canna or Dahlias, and store them for the winter in a cool, dry location.
- Full Sun & Afternoon Shade In Hot Climates
- Moderate Moisture Needs
- Organic Well-Drained Soil
- Deadhead After Blooms Fade & Prune or Dig in Fall
