Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

The Double Surprise Tulip (Tulipa 'Double Surprise') breaks all the rules when it comes to what a Tulip is supposed to look like! This full, feminine, and flirty spring-flowering Tulip is more of a quadruple than a double. We knew we had to add this phenomenal tulip to our selection, and we're so glad we did. As one of the newest and most spectacular varieties, it's only available in limited numbers.
The Double Surprise Tulip features Peony-like blooms that erupt with petals. These soft and festive blooms look more like crepe paper pom-poms than they do Tulips. With white, magenta, green, and light pink coloration, these late spring blooms will turn your yard into a surprise party just for you.
Nothing can get these balloon-sized blooms down! The Double Surprise Tulip has strong stems and lovely soft-green foliage. Thriving throughout USDA growing zones 3 to 7, these spring ephemerals can reach a fantastic height of around 16 inches tall.
Planting and Application:
You won't want to hide these charming blooms in your backyard or in container gardens and planters around the porch or patio. The amazing Double Surprise Tulip is happy to decorate your garden bed with a bright voluminous border. Or consider using it to host a garden party as a mass planting or as a spring bulb soiree by pairing it with yellows and reds. Double Surprise Tulip will set the scene in the indoor garden as well! Force indoors for a surprise winter delight on your dining table and in a bright sunny window!
Snip blooms from your outdoor plantings and create gorgeous bouquets and floral arrangements! You'll enjoy plenty of these blooms when you fill your perennial and cottage gardens with Double Surprise blooms! Pollinators are drawn to these blooms as well, plus curious neighbors coming to see how you got your spring flowers to grow some large! These long-lasting flowers make a splash as a cut flower and they often bloom just in time for Mother's Day.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Tulips love the sunshine, so full-sun regions of your landscape are ideal for planting your Golden Apeldoorns. Any soil type is suitable so long as it is not soggy. Deadhead after flowers fade, but let the leaves remain so they can make food for the bulb and next year's flowers! Not only is it strong, but it also has incredible endurance. Its blooms endure through spring showers and days of sunshine. Fall-planted bulbs need well-drained soil with moderate moisture needs. Add bulb fertilizer to each hole for best results.
- Full Sun For Strongest Growth
- Well-Drained Soil
- Moderate Moisture Needs
- Deadhead After Flowers Fade & Prune Mounds After Leaves Yellow
- Deer Seldom Bother Them
Don't miss out on the surprise and delight of your own Double Surprise Tulips. Order yours while Nature Hills Nursery still have them in stock. We will ship your bulbs based on the correct planting time for your area.
