Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Important Notes
Container Volume Specifications
- Trade Gallon Standard: Our containers follow industry-standard "trade gallon" specifications established by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI Z60.1) for nursery stock
- Volume Variations: Actual soil volume may vary due to plant root systems and growing medium settlement
- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant
- Container plants are available throughout the growing season
- Specific varieties may have limited availability in certain sizes

Growing Zones
Like having a touch of gold in the night, the Chocolate Sunrise Canna Lily (Canna x generalis 'Sunrise'.) is a contrasting vision of bold, heavily saturated pure gold blooms that stand atop an upright clump of exotic chocolatey-black foliage!
This hybrid Canna is considered a dwarf form, and grows just 24-36 inches tall but stays compact and narrow-growing, forming upright clumps just 12-18 inches wide! Making Chocolate Sunrise ideal for space-saving summer gardening and container gardening!
Canna Lilies are fantastic summer blooming exotic perennials that thrive in frost-free growing zones of 9 and up. But all growing zones can enjoy these plants as seasonal summer accents, then store the bulbs like one would Elephant Ears, Dahlia, and Caladiums for the winter!
Planting and Application:
Chocolate Sunrise Canna Lily adds a dramatic pop of color to your landscape beds as seasonal focal points and backdrops, while groupings bring in the bees and butterflies to your garden beds! Massing and bunching these rhizomes together in the landscape creates an incredibly dramatic effect! The dark foliage is sure to attract all the attention with barely any work on your part!
The most impressive way to display Chocolate Sunrise Canna Lily is as the vertical specimen or focal point to a large mixed planter, or in groupings in large upscale containers! Raised planters with other tropical plants enliven sunny front porch pots, and balcony planters while doubling as privacy around seating, conversation pieces around entertaining areas, and screening in poolside pots!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Keep these full-sun plants in moderately moist to almost wet enriched soil, that is always well-drained so they do not rot. It is also a good idea to ensure that Canna has a 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch over the surface, especially in drier, hotter areas. Provide regular fertilizer and deadhead when blooming is done. Canna are spring-planted summer-flowering rhizomes, and are not frost-hardy, so they do need to be dug in the fall before they freeze. Keep them in a cool, dark, frost-free area in a bag in a garage or shed.
