Planting & Care Instructions

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Give this barberry full sun, meaning at least 6 hours of direct light daily, to achieve the deep, intense crimson foliage color. While it handles partial shade well, the leaves will likely fade to a greener or muddier bronze without sufficient light intensity.
  • Soil: This plant is incredibly adaptable to urban conditions and poor soils, provided they drain well. If you are planting in heavy clay, mix in compost or plant in a slightly raised berm to ensure the roots never sit in standing water.

Watering Requirements

Water deeply and regularly during the first growing season to encourage a deep, resilient root system. Once established, this shrub is notably drought tolerant; however, offering a drink during long dry spells prevents leaf scorch and keeps the foliage looking fresh.

Pruning Tips

Because this variety maintains a naturally compact mound, it requires very little maintenance, but you can shape it in early spring before new leaves emerge. Pruning at this time removes any winter damage and stimulates vigorous, colorful new growth for the season ahead.

Fertilizer Needs

Barberries are light feeders, so a single application of a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring is usually sufficient. Avoid fertilizing after mid-summer, as this can push soft, tender growth that will be damaged by the first freeze of winter.

WorryFree® Crimson Cutie® Barberry (Berberis thunbergii 'UCONNBTCP4N') is a vibrant colorful little gem of a shrub that is not invasive! Spring brings glossy, leathery purple-red foliage in spring and summer which transforms to orange-red in fall! The cute little leaves and tiny red stickers have matching stems as they transform throughout the seasons! An excellent small shrub with fantastic color and thorns that will deter deer with some prickly thorns.

Barberry also has delightful tiny yellow blossoms that you may not notice, but your local bees and butterflies sure will! The darling little bells dangle and give early pollinators a vital nectar resource. Compact and naturally rounded, these deciduous shrubs are a fantastic non-invasive option to the popular Barberry!

Crimson Cutie® is seed-free, so after those flowers are gone, there are no seeds to worry about escaping into the wild where these shrubs have become a bit of a nuisance. Deer-resistant and cold-hardy, these are smaller spreading mounds that are generally neat and tidy!

Planting and Application:

Crimson Cutie® Barberry is a darling size for low hedges and borders! The thorns are a good deterrent to stop foot traffic of both the two and four-legged varieties while adding a colorful backdrop for smaller shrubs and perennials! Great for lining property lines and along the road for a colorful burst of curb appeal!

Pop these into large planters for a showy specimen and focal point in the garden! Ideal for anchoring garden beds, heading up a walkway, or being a vibrant focal point among other burgundy flowering or foliage plants! Pair with brooding purples, or offset with radiant orange flowers!

  • Purple-Red Spring & Summer Foliage
  • Orange-Red Fall Color
  • Pollinator-Friendly Darling Little Yellow Blossoms
  • Hedge, Specimen & Large Containers
  • Sterile Seeds Birds Seek Out

#ProPlantTips for Care:

WorryFree® Barberry shines in the full sun and partial shade! Pruning is best done by shearing in spring if needed. Plant in well-drained, enriched soil and provide moderate, yet consistent moisture during the hot summer months.

  • Full Sun For Best Color & Tolerates Part Shade
  • Enriched Moist Soil
  • Well-Drained Location & Mulch for Insulation
  • Deer Resistant
  • Non-Invasive Barberry

WorryFree® Crimson Cutie® Barberry lives up to its name with rosy pink and purple tones, glossy leaves, and no worry about endangering local habitat!
