Description
Sweet Reward® Pink Azalea (Rhododendron x 'NCB193') is a fragrant, deciduous azalea from Proven Winners® that covers itself in bright pink flowers from early to late spring. It grows 3 to 6 feet tall and wide in zones 5 through 8, and it blooms once a year on wood grown the season before.
Why You'll Love Sweet Reward® Pink Azalea
- Fragrant, bright pink blooms cover the plant from early to late spring
- Deciduous foliage drops in fall and returns fresh each spring
- Bushy habit (3-6 ft. tall, 3-6 ft. wide) stays dense without heavy pruning
- Part of the trusted Proven Winners lineup, bred for performance
- Attracts pollinators while in bloom
- Works well in large containers, foundation plantings, or massed in small groups
Growing Conditions
Sweet Reward® thrives in zones 5-8 and grows best in part sun to full sun, with at least four hours of direct sun a day. In the warmer part of its range, morning sun with some afternoon shade keeps it looking its best. Like all azaleas, it needs acidic, well-drained soil that stays consistently moist. If your native soil is alkaline, amend with sulfur or plant in a bed of acidic potting mix. A layer of pine bark or pine needle mulch helps maintain acidity and keeps roots cool.
Size and Growth Habit
This deciduous azalea matures at 3-6 feet tall with a spread of 3-6 feet. The naturally dense, mounding form means you won't need to reach for the pruners to keep it looking tidy. Its leaves drop in fall, and a fresh set returns each spring.
Landscape Uses and Design Ideas
Sweet Reward® is a natural fit for borders, woodland edges, and foundation plantings where you want reliable spring color and a fragrance you can enjoy up close. Plant it in groups of three or five along a walkway for a ribbon of pink each spring. It also pairs well with other azaleas and rhododendrons for a layered spring display. Planting and Care Tips
Plant at the same depth as the nursery container. Azalea roots are shallow and fibrous, so avoid planting too deep. Feed with an acid-formulated fertilizer in early spring to support healthy growth and bloom.
Sweet Reward® blooms on old wood, so if you need to shape the plant, prune right after the spring bloom finishes. Pruning later in summer or fall removes the buds that carry next spring's flowers. Water consistently during the first growing season, then maintain even moisture through dry spells.
