Quaking Aspen Tree

I ordered a quaking Aspen and received it in excellent condition due to Nature Hill securing it well in the cardboard shipping box! I planted the tree on the same day that I received it but opted to wait until the evening when the temperature was cooler. Then, I gave the tree a little water and mulch. I am so happy because the tree has some new growth and is thriving well! Thank You , Nature Hill, for your excellent Planting Guide so my tree got a good start!

Hi Mary! We're thrilled to hear that your quaking Aspen tree arrived in excellent condition and that our planting guide was helpful in giving it a good start. We hope it continues to thrive in its new home. Thank you for choosing Nature Hill!

Growing in N Georgia Mountians!

I bought this tree in 2020, after talking with customer service. We discussed that my area is out of the Aspens comfort zones 2-6 (I am zone 7 ). However, I am also at elevation of 2,000 feet above sea level, so the Aspen MAY survive ok. Well, here are photos of her 2 years old. Seems to be doing well! I did keep fencing around the tree for those years as we have many deer, rabbits. I do question if I should prune off smaller branches that grow about 1-2 ft from ground- should this be done this winter?

Dear Michelle,

Thank you so much for sharing your Aspen tree journey with us! It’s wonderful to hear that despite the zone challenge, your tree is thriving beautifully two years in the elevated North Georgia mountains—that’s a real testament to your care and the protection you’ve provided against deer and rabbits.

Regarding your question about pruning those lower branches: yes, it is generally a good idea to prune toward late winter before the new growth cycle begins. Removing the smaller branches 1-2 feet from the ground can help reduce the risk of disease and encourage a stronger, more upright structure for your Aspen. Just be sure to use clean, sharp tools and avoid cutting too far into the older wood.

If you’d like, we can also send you some detailed guides on Aspen care and winter pruning tips. Feel free to reach back anytime—supporting your growing success is what we love to do!

Smaller Than I Imagined

I ordered three quaking aspens and I was very surprised that they all came in one long box. The box was intact and looked like it had been handled very carefully. I pictured the trees would be a little more full or bloomed, not just a box of sticks basically. Perhaps I’m just a little uneducated when it comes to trees, but I was really excited to get some landscaping in my yard. My trees look kind of sad and lonely at the moment. I know good things take time so I’ll try to be patient, but I suppose I wanted a quicker result.

Hi,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with us. We truly appreciate your honesty and understand how excited you were to see fuller quaking aspens right away. It’s completely natural to hope for quick, lush results when planting—it sounds like you had a beautiful vision for your yard!

Quaking aspens, like many deciduous trees shipped bare-root or dormant, often arrive looking more like sticks because they’re carefully shipped to protect their roots and ensure healthy growth when planted. Though they may seem “lonely” now, this state is actually ideal for acclimation. With proper planting and care, those little sticks will soon enthusiastically burst to life with leaves and new growth as the season progresses.

To support your new trees as they settle in, make sure to plant them in well-drained soil, water regularly (especially in the first growing season), and give them a quiet space to establish their roots. If you’d like, we can also send along some easy-to-follow care guides or advice tailored to quaking aspens that could help boost your confidence and enjoyment during this early phase.

We appreciate your trust in Nature Hills to help you bring beauty to your landscape, and we’re here to assist you every step of the way. Thank you again for sharing your experience and enthusiasm—your new aspens are on their way to becoming a stunning part of your yard!

Hi,

Thank you so much for sharing your honest feedback with us. We truly understand your surprise and initial disappointment—receiving your quaking aspens as bare-root trees often looks a bit surprising at first since they’re shipped dormant for safe travel and to ensure their roots stay healthy.

Planting bare-root trees is actually a great way to establish strong, lasting growth even if they seem little 'sticks' at delivery. Give them time to awaken and sprout branches as the seasons progress—you’ll soon see fuller foliage and that beautiful quaking motion aspens are known for. Meanwhile, we’re happy to provide resources on properly planting and caring for your aspens to help them thrive quickly; you can find a helpful guide here: [Insert Planting Guide Link].

Dear Jeri,

Thank you so much for sharing your update with us! We’re delighted to hear that your planting is thriving, even with a snowy surprise shortly after. It’s fantastic that you followed the directions carefully—that definitely helps plants adapt to unexpected weather conditions.

If the cold spell continues, be sure to keep an eye on the soil moisture since sometimes winter-weather watering changes, and consider a light mulch layer to protect roots from freezing. Feel free to reach out anytime if you have questions or need advice on continuing care through the seasons.

Frequently Asked Questions

How tall are aspen trees?

  • Quaking Aspen trees typically grow 40-50 feet tall with a 20-30 foot spread. As fast-growing natives, they can reach mature height relatively quickly in USDA zones 2-6. Plant them in clusters for the most natural look and authentic grove experience.

Are aspen trees evergreen?

  • No, aspen trees are deciduous, shedding their heart-shaped leaves each fall after turning brilliant yellow-gold. Quaking Aspens go dormant in winter, revealing their distinctive white bark. For year-round greenery, consider evergreen options available at naturehills.com.

What USDA hardiness zones are suitable for growing Quaking Aspen trees?

  • Quaking Aspen trees are cold hardy in USDA zones 2-6. These native trees thrive in cooler climates and struggle in hot, humid conditions found in southern zones. Plant in spring after frost danger passes for best establishment.

Do Quaking Aspen trees prefer full sun, partial shade, or full shade conditions?

  • Quaking Aspen trees thrive in full sun conditions. As pioneer species that naturally colonize open meadows and high elevations, they need bright, direct sunlight to reach their full 40-50 foot height potential. Plant in the sunniest spot available for best growth and fall color.

What type of soil conditions do Quaking Aspen trees need to thrive?

  • Quaking Aspens prefer well-draining, moist soils and tolerate a wide pH range from acidic to slightly alkaline. They naturally thrive in open meadows and higher elevations in zones 2-6. Plant in areas with good drainage to prevent root rot, and shop at Nature Hills for healthy specimens.

How often should I water my newly planted Quaking Aspen tree?

  • Water newly planted Quaking Aspen trees deeply 2-3 times per week for the first growing season. These fast-growing natives need consistent moisture to establish their root system. Check soil moisture 2-3 inches down and water when it feels dry to the touch.

Are Quaking Aspen trees deer resistant or do deer typically browse on them?

  • Quaking Aspen trees are not deer resistant and are actually a preferred browse for deer and elk. The product description specifically mentions that aspens "support deer, elk, grouse, and butterflies," indicating they're a food source. If deer pressure is high in your area, consider fencing young trees or choosing alternative species for vulnerable locations.

What are the best companion plants to grow near Quaking Aspen trees?

  • Quaking Aspens pair beautifully with native understory plants like wild bergamot, lupine, and native grasses that thrive in zones 2-6. Since aspens create filtered shade and spread through root suckers, choose companions that tolerate both sun and partial shade. Plant ferns and wildflowers 10+ feet from the trunk to allow room for natural grove expansion.

What ongoing maintenance and care do Quaking Aspen trees require after establishment?

  • Established Quaking Aspens need minimal care beyond occasional watering during dry spells and mulching around the base. These hardy natives (Zones 2-6) naturally form groves through root suckers, which you can remove or allow to spread. Prune only dead or damaged branches in late fall to maintain their graceful pyramidal form.
