The packaging was excellent

The packaging was excellent, and there were even little apples on the tree! It has acclimated well and continues to have vigorous growth. I can’t wait to put it in the ground in the fall!

Little apples already on the tree at arrival is a great sign that it was well established before it shipped. Glad to hear it settled in without skipping a beat. When you get it in the ground this fall, give it a good deep watering at planting and a layer of mulch around the base to help it head into winter strong. We hope it rewards you with a full harvest for many years to come!

Gala apples do seem to take to container growing well, and it sounds like yours hit the ground running. When you are ready to move it to a permanent spot, just try to do it in early spring or fall to give the roots the best chance. Thanks for sharing the update, Melba.

It arrived a bit dry

It arrived a bit dry, so some of the leaves look dry and damaged. But there are a couple of new leaves so I am hoping it will eventually recover.

Love Gala Apples

My neighbor growing up had a few apple trees. They tasted so great right off the tree. I'm hoping my kids will be able to enjoy the same. I bought the Gala, Fuji & 2 Honeycrisp trees. All arrived in good shape. The Gala is growing fastest although the 2 honeycrisp trees are right there as well.

Hello Glass,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with your new apple trees! It’s heartwarming to hear how planting Gala, Fuji, and Honeycrisp trees reminds you of those cherished childhood memories. It sounds like your orchard is off to a fantastic start with the Gala edging ahead, and it’s great to know the Honeycrisp trees are keeping pace!

To help ensure your kids get to enjoy those delicious apples right from your own yard, I’d recommend a few tips: make sure your trees get plenty of sunlight (at least six hours a day), consistent watering, and consider a balanced fertilizer in early spring to encourage healthy growth and fruiting. Also, keep an eye out for pests like codling moths and apple maggots, and pruning the branches annually will help keep your trees strong and productive.

Dear Glass,

Thank you so much for sharing your heartfelt story and your wonderful experience with your new apple trees! It’s truly special that you’re creating those nostalgic moments for your children, just as you enjoyed growing up. We’re glad to hear your Gala apple tree is thriving, and it’s inspiring to know the Honeycrisp trees are catching up nicely — they’re both fantastic varieties with delicious fruit.

As your trees grow and mature, remember they’ll benefit from consistent watering, especially in the warmer months, and occasional feeding with a balanced fruit tree fertilizer to support healthy growth and sweet apples. Good airflow and proper spacing help prevent disease, and mulch around the base maintains moisture and temperature. Watching your trees flourish and produce that first crispy apple off the branch will make your effort all the more rewarding!

Frequently Asked Questions

Are gala apples small?

  • Gala apples are actually medium to large-sized apples, not small. The Gala Apple Tree produces large, crisp apples with firm white flesh and excellent storage capability. For best fruit size, plant with another apple variety nearby as a pollinator.

What are the full sun and soil drainage requirements for planting a Gala Apple Tree?

  • Gala Apple Trees require full sun and tolerate wet, heavy clay soil better than most apple varieties. They adapt well to various soil conditions as long as the location receives 6+ hours of direct sunlight daily. Plant in your sunniest spot for best fruit production, available at naturehills.com.

How much water does a newly planted Gala Apple Tree need in the first year?

  • Water newly planted Gala Apple Trees deeply once or twice weekly, providing about 1-2 inches total. Since Galas tolerate heavy clay soil, adjust frequency based on drainage - clay soils need less frequent watering. Check soil moisture 2-3 inches deep and water when dry.

What pruning is required for a Gala Apple Tree to keep it healthy and productive?

  • Prune Gala Apple Trees during dormancy in late winter to remove dead, diseased, or crossing branches. Focus on opening the center for air circulation and maintaining a manageable height for harvesting. Since Galas produce at a young age, avoid heavy pruning in the first few years to encourage early fruiting.

Is the Gala Apple Tree prone to pests and diseases, and how can I prevent them?

  • Gala Apple Trees are generally low-maintenance with good disease resistance, though they can face common apple issues like aphids, codling moth, and fire blight. Practice good sanitation by removing fallen fruit and leaves, ensure proper air circulation with annual pruning, and consider organic sprays during dormant season. Shop disease-resistant varieties at naturehills.com.

How is shipping handled for bare-root or potted Gala Apple Trees from online nurseries?

  • Bare-root apple trees ship dormant in late winter/early spring, while potted trees can ship throughout the growing season. Bare-root stock establishes faster but has a narrower planting window. Plant bare-root trees immediately upon arrival, and potted trees within a few days for best results.
