Gardeners and landscapers often search for a broadleaf evergreen plant that will provide both flowers and a lovely scent. This defines the Gardenia!

If you reside in a warm climate, the Gardenia bush is a fantastic humidity-resistant plant to select for your garden, for containers and planters, for your curb appeal, while appealing to your senses with their heavenly fragrance!

The dreamy white blossoms gleam against the dark glossy evergreen foliage and bloom for a long period of time! The plush petals are wonderfully scented, filling an entire room with perfume when you snip the strong stems for bouquets, boutonnieres, and a must-have for a bride's bouquet.

There are over 140 different species of Gardenias spread around the world. At Nature Hills, we market some of the best Gardenias available, especially for zones 6 through 10. There are some Gardenia bushes available today that will perform wonderfully in cooler areas, such as in zones 6 and 7.

Also known as Cape Jasmine or Jessamine, Gardenias include Gardenia augusta and Gardenia jasminoides varieties plus several hybrids and cultivars to choose from! Seldom bothered by pests or deer, Gardenia are fantastically easy to grow.

How To Use Gardenia In Your Garden

Transform your landscape with either a single fragrant specimen planted by your seating areas and front door or go big with an incredibly fragrant hedge!

No neighbor will mind having a living privacy barrier like a fragrant Gardenia hedge screening your property! You can prune or shear these shrubs into formal, clean lines, to create backdrops and borders. Plant a row of Gardenia along your home's sunny foundation for an impressive four-season evergreen display!

Smaller Gardenia can easily be planted in planters and containers throughout your landscape, or on porches, patios, balconies, and around your seating areas in raised beds to perfume your spaces up close and personal!

Caring For Gardenias

Gardenia bushes are also easy to grow! Get your new Gardenia off on the right foot with these simple tips, planting advice in our #ProPlantTips, and with Nature Hills Root Booster!

  • Ensure the proper amount of full sun, needing at least 6 hours of sun a day
  • Some Gardenia can handle afternoon shade, especially in the hottest climates
  • These broadleaf evergreens do best in well-drained soil that’s organically enriched
  • Create raised gardens or berms if you have poor drainage.
  • Water new plants regularly using the Finger Test to help them get established
  • Provide a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch over the root system
  • Prune Gardenias after their summer blooms begin to fade

Gardenias that are in prominent locations of your landscape look best when deadheaded, removing spent blooms that may be turning brown.

Are Gardenias Indoor Or Outdoor Plants?

Landscaping Gardenias are outdoor plants and do best in those conditions in the appropriate growing zones. Florist Gardenias are great indoor plants as long as they have bright, indirectly sunny windows and regular attention to water.

Landscaping Gardenias, however, can be briefly grown indoors during the winters if you live in a more northern climate, treating them as you would patio Citrus and other tropical plants. Learn about acclimating these kinds of patio plants indoors for the winter and back outdoors for the spring Here in our Garden Blog.

Do Gardenias Come Back Every Year?

Gardenias are hardy woody shrubs that are broad-leaf evergreens and remain in leaf year-round. They do not do well in cold weather and will die. Gardenias are not root hardy and will not grow back from their roots if frost kills them back. Choose a Gardenia that is appropriate for your hardiness zone or check with your local County Extension Office to see which Gardenia does best in your area.
