Introducing The False Cypress!
False Cypress varieties are wonderfully graceful additions to your landscape, bringing such a unique form and a curious growth habit as well! The fronds can grow in whorled, flattened sprays of dark-green foliage, while other varieties have long threadlike, or fern-like foliage.
Originating from Japan, native Chamaecyparis trees can grow into towering 70-foot-tall specimens, but the garden False Cypress at Nature Hills are smaller landscaping ornamentals that won’t grow larger than 20 feet.
Ranging from bright green to gold to blue-green, including the bleach blond tips of the Cream Ball False Cypress, and even showy spring new growth that changes tone in the summer! There is a unique and colorful False Cypress to enliven your landscape here at NatureHills.com!
Using False Cypress In The Landscape Setting
The gracefully arching branches are perfect for Asian-inspired, Zen gardens, Rain Gardens, and formal plantings alike! Without any shearing and fussing over!
The naturally tidy forms are a breeze to maintain and their soft needles meld into formal and informal landscapes equally!
Ideal next to water features, near ponds, and around areas with higher moisture, the extra water keeps these lush evergreens growing their best. They even handle part shade settings! Few evergreens can boast that!
The dense branching and soft-to-the-touch needles make False Cypress the perfect hedge close to where you walk, such as along a driveway or path. They work beautifully along a narrow side yard or as slim property division and screening, creating a friendly fence that adds privacy and blocks an unsightly view.
Their tolerance for a bit more shade means they work as hedges and massing plants through areas that run into both sun and shade. False Cypresses are also happy in mixed shrub borders where they may be shaded out by larger neighbors for part of the day.
The smaller size also means evergreen beauty for container gardeners and balcony gardens!
Caring For False Cypress Shrubs
False Cypress are among the most amenable coniferous evergreens around!
Thriving throughout USDA planting zones 4 through 8, they handle decent amounts of cold weather with protection from drying northern winter winds, and hot summers with protection from hot afternoon sun.
Growing best in full sun in cooler climates, in all growing zones, however, False Cypress handles some afternoon shade and part shade settings equally well!
Simply plant them in a well-drained location with regular moisture access and a 3-4 inch deep layer of arborist mulch to keep them happy! They aren’t particular and grow in neutral to acidic soil.
Rarely requiring pruning, in the summer you can give wayward branching, broken or dead branches, and to clean out the old needles that may be collecting in the interiors. Be careful pruning too much because False Cypress does not grow new buds from old wood, so a light hand is needed, and careful planning beforehand when giving your shrub a trim.
Not handling drought for long periods, be sure to provide watering before a long dry winter and during long hot summers to keep that lush soft foliage looking fresh all year long!
Beyond that - False Cypress are prized for their pest and disease resistance, for being seldom bothered by deer, for tolerating coastal/saline sites, and for their low-maintenance care needs!

Golden Mop False Cypress
A mophead-like rounded and cascading golden shrub with thread-like gold-green sprays of foliage, Golden Mop sounds messy but it forms a tidy (albeit) shaggy 2 - 3 feet tall mound and can grow about 3-4 feet wide at maturity. The shocking gold color really stands out against other evergreens and throughout the bleaker winter months.
Cream Ball False Cypress
A unique light green round shrub with unique bleach-blond frosted tips! The rounded form is small and tidy, growing evenly up and out in all directions for an unexpected color pop in your landscape or container gardens!
Fernspray False Cypress
Truly one of a kind, the Fernspray has eye-catching branching that resembles flattened Fern fronds which spray out in random yet ornamentally pleasing directions! A tidy pyramidal upright shrub, the texture this plant lends your garden is like nothing else! Growing 8 - 12 feet tall but just 3-4 feet wide at the base, Fernspray neatly tapers to a pleasing point.
Dwarf Hinoki False Cypress
The whorled and sculpted branching of the Dwarf Hinoki almost looks melted and the branches appear to pile neatly atop each other to form an irregular and informal pyramidal form that is a must-have for Asian-inspired gardens, as it resembles Bonsai! Growing just 2-4 feet in height and in width at their base, these are perfect specimens for planters!
Vintage Gold False Cypress
Vintage Gold has a shaggy appearance as its golden green branches create fountain-like sprays. Growing 18 - 30 inches low and adding bright informal color to front-of-the-garden borders and hedges, spreading 3 - 4 feet wide. It holds this golden yellow color all year through without fading!
Pinpoint® Blue False Cypress & Pinpoint® Blue and Gold False Cypress
Tall and columnar with an upright form similar to Junipers, but far less pokey, the Pinpoint® False Cypresses have a nice slim profile for your hedges and property definition or serve as evergreen punctuation throughout your landscaping beds and borders.
Compact Hinoki False Cypress
A unique evergreen with paddle-like ferny foliage and a pyramidal form, Compact Hinoki doesn’t hold its foliage flat and horizontal like the others! Instead, this curiosity grows its flattened branching vertically to create an eye-catching texture among all other types of plants in your garden! One of the larger False Cypress, Compact Hinoki grows 8 - 12 feet tall and spreads 6 - 8 feet wide at the base.
Tempelhof Hinoki False Cypress
A beautifully sculpted little shrub, Tempelhof is a gorgeous living work of art with scalloped branching that’s held in a dense rounded ball of lush green! Not the fastest growing, it takes time to create each ornamental branch, but will eventually grow into an 8 - 10 foot tall and 4 - 6 foot wide specimen you will want to show off!
Sungold False Cypress
Ultra-finely textured and threadlike branches of the Sungold False Cypress create a neat yet shaggy mound of golden green! The branches seem to tumble and cascade over each other and bring bright color to your garden all year round! Forming ornamental mounds 5 - 6 feet in height that can spread and spill 6 - 8 feet wide.
