Love a handsome look with plenty of natural drama? Want to support your local ecology with refined landscape plants that look like a million bucks? Sophisticated Red Feather® Arrowwood Viburnum (Viburnum dentatum 'JN Select') is an excellent cultivar of the classic North American Arrowwood Viburnum. Its many ornamental attributes make this one a real winner!
In spring, the emerging foliage is highly pigmented a deep maroon burgundy. The textured leaves become two-toned and finally age to a lustrous dark green for an attractive look all season. Held at the tips of the stick-straight branches are clusters of pretty flowers in summer. The fragrant blooms draw butterflies, beneficial pollinators and Hummingbirds to your landscape.
Native American First People used straight branches for arrows, so you'll have a chance to observe how the attractive structure sculpts snow and ice. The name Red Feather® Arrowwood Viburnum comes from the way the young spring leaves seem to resemble the fletching on an arrow. Even in the full glory of springtime, this good-looking and low-maintenance shrub stands up and stands out. It even provides a stately profile in winter.
You'll make a big statement in autumn! This selection offers a fantastic red-purple and maroon fall color display. Include another one of our Viburnum dentatum species or cultivar shrubs to pollinate the summer flowers. You'll feed local birds such as Robins, Northern Flickers and Bluebirds with their blue-black fruit.
Planting and Application:
Versatile Red Feather Arrowwood Viburnum can be used as a landscape asset throughout your yard. No matter where you use this shrub, you'll develop a wildlife resource. The flowers bring a tremendous nectar resource, and can be used to bring pollinators to Victory Gardens.
Pump up the look of mature windbreaks and evergreen trees with a row of these colorful shrubs. You can create a beautiful garden feature with a collection of our Arrowwood Viburnums used in an informal grouping. Even small yards can utilize them for screening. Place them to define a 'living garden wall' by your seating area, leaving enough room on the other side for a private retreat.
Use a single Red Feather® Arrowwood Viburnum at the corner of your home and it grows into a memorable specimen plant with gorgeous green foliage in summer. Consider where you'll plant it to maximize its impact. You'll anchor your foundation planting with this beautiful, hard-working choice. Its lush growth and dense branching make it a wonderful screening plant, as well. Shield your family from prying eyes with the help of this exceptional flowering foliage shrub.
You'll also want to think about adding their spring and fall color to your mixed garden borders. Use them as a backdrop on the north side of perennial gardens to highlight their summer flowers and fall berries.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Super easy to grow in part sun to full sun, and appreciates moisture, these are cold-hardy shrubs in USDA growing zones 4 through 8. Viburnum fruit the best in full sun but will also grow and flower beautifully in partial shade. Preferring moist, well-drained soil, these are widely adaptable to most soil types and moisture levels once established!
Prune only after the flowers fade, though you will miss out on those colorful berries! Trim out the largest and oldest stems each winter to rejuvenate your shrub, and suckers can be removed at any time down to the ground. Resistant to deer, Black Walnut tree juglone and cold, there's little that fazes these deciduous shrubs!
- Grow in Full Sun To Partial Shade
- Widely Adaptable to Most Well-Drained Soil Types
- Provide Mulched Beds & Moderate, Regular Moisture
- Prune After Flowering To Deadhead & Shape

Frequently Asked Questions
Are Viburnum Bushes Fragrant?
The flowers on the Red Feather® Viburnum have a pleasant fragrance!
When Do You Prune Flowering Viburnum Shrubs?
Viburnum shrubs bloom on old wood, so it is very important to only prune them immediately after the flowers fade. Should you wish to enjoy the fruit that forms after the flowers fade, then do not prune, instead remove one-third of the oldest, fattest stems that are no longer as vigorous. Pruning them out at the ground level. This leaves fruit for birds and winter interest and increases overall plant vigor while reducing the size of your shrub.
Do Viburnums Like Full Sun or Shade? What is the Best Location for Viburnum?
Viburnums in general need full sun for the most fruit and flowers, but also do well in partial shade and afternoon shade. Highly adaptable, they enjoy mulched, enriched, well-drained soil that is slightly acidic. They need regular moisture while young, but once established will only need supplemental moisture during extreme heat and drought.
Does Red Feather® Viburnum Produce Fruit?
The Red Feather® Viburnum will produce rich red fruit that matures to a deep blue-black in the fall but they need another similar Viburnum dentatum or Arrowwood Viburnum planted nearby for cross-pollination.
Does Viburnum Spread? How tall does Red Feather® Viburnum get?
Red Feather® Viburnum can form suckers at the base of the plant, but these can be removed when pruning after flowering or mowed down if you do not wish it to spread. Not invasive, these plants will politely form tidy thickets over time when allowed. Red Feather® Viburnum can grow 8-10 feet tall and wide in optimal conditions.
Do Viburnum Shrubs Lose Their Leaves in Winter?
Red Feather® Viburnum is a deciduous shrub that will drop its leaves in very cold winters in the fall and shows off red-purple coloration.
