Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: Plant your Tiny Wine® Gold Ninebark where it gets at least 6 hours of full sun daily. While it can handle partial shade, the golden foliage will be most vibrant and the pink blooms more plentiful with ample direct sunlight.
  • Soil: This shrub adapts well to various soil types but thrives best in soil that drains well. If you have heavy clay or sandy soil, amend the planting site with organic matter like compost to improve drainage and retain moisture.

Watering Requirements

Water consistently during the first growing season to help the root system establish, checking the soil moisture weekly. Once established, Tiny Wine® Gold Ninebark is somewhat drought tolerant, but regular watering during dry spells keeps the foliage lush and prevents leaf scorch.

Pruning Tips

This ninebark blooms on old wood, so the best time to prune is immediately after it finishes flowering in late spring. You can shape it lightly or remove up to one-third of the oldest stems down to the ground to rejuvenate the plant and encourage fresh, vigorous growth.

Fertilizer Needs

Feed your ninebark in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or a layer of compost before new growth begins. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers late in the season, as this can push soft growth that may not harden off before winter frost.

#ProPlantTips For Care

Disease resistant and hardy native to North America, these tough shrubs are carefree, easy to grow plants. Tiny Wine® Gold Ninebark is one of those not-so-fussy plants that will have the best color and strength when planted in full sun.

They can tolerate most soils and prefer slightly acidic, well-drained soil, but keep your plants stress-free and protect your investment by providing additional water during the drought.

No pruning is needed, just allow it to take on its natural form. For older shrubs that need a little touch-up, you can keep your shrub looking great with a 3-year renewal pruning in early spring. Take out a few of the oldest stems down to the ground. If needed though, prune after flowering to not miss any of those lovely blooms.

Gardeners in deer country already know this, but deer will try any plant if they get hungry enough. However, Ninebarks are generally resistant to deer feeding.

Every season of the year, your Ninebark is doing something. From delicate white blooms in spring to the fall foliage. Each leaf is highlighted with tones of red and purple. Even in winter, the multi-colored bark makes this Ninebark appealing over the entire season!

You can't go wrong with any Ninebark, but for that Midas touch, the Tiny Wine® Gold will make an amazing addition to your landscape for year-round color and appeal! Call to order yours from Nature Hills now!
