Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

Growing Zones 4-8
Bright buttercups for butterflies on a bush! No color is as cheery as the color yellow, and very few flowers can touch Sunny Boulevard® for its bright yellow flowers. Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Sunny Boulevard® St. John's Wort (Hypericum x SUNNY BOULEVARD 'Deppe') is a beautiful and strong hybrid American native. It blooms all summer, offering a very long season of color with its bright yellow buttercup-type flowers.
This shrub is lacy and soft on the outside, with its soft grey-green leaves and graceful mounding habit, but it has an iron constitution. It is evergreen in all but the most severe winters. You can count on this plant as a mainstay in your garden. In the autumn, shiny brown capsules appear to add fall and winter interest to your garden beds and borders!
Don't let the cheery flowers and soft foliage fool you, this plant is a tough fighter! St. John's Wort makes itself right at home, even spreading out a little to form nice colonies! Cold-hardy throughout USDA growing zones 4 to 8 and grows into a tidy 2-3 feet in height and spreads a bit wider at maturity. St. John's Wort is also a beneficial herb and has long been used to relieve everything from anxiety to inflammation. While we don't recommend using landscaping Hypercum medicinally, just the sunny blooms and the sheer amount of butterflies that arrive are sure to lift your spirits!
Planting and Application:
Though you can prune up St. John's Wort and it will be fine with it, most people prefer the 'wild' native-looking accent it brings to your garden. St. Johns Wort maintains a tidy 'scruffiness' to formal plantings and cottage gardens, and even brightening garden beds as a backdrop! Sunny Boulevard® as well as fitting in perfectly in informal country borders. Any way you style it, St. John's Wort compliments your individual garden design!
Pair Sunny Boulevard® with other pollinator and native cultivar plants that will show off their graceful, natural form and fit into a naturalized planting! Baby Blue Eyes, 'Little Joe' Joe-Pye Weed, or Paprika Yarrow, for instance, are good companions and their colors will look great with that Sunny Boulevard® yellow.
The 3-4 foot wide-spreading nature of these plants makes them perfect for erosion control, on steep slopes, and en masse. Need to fill an area with sunshine and butterflies? Plant a few St. John's Wort and sit back and relax!
- Bright Yellow Flowers All Summer
- Willow-Like Leaves & Fine-Texture
- Bee & Butterfly Nectar Resource & Hardy Native Hybrid
- Persistent Seedpods For Winter Interest
- Spreading & Naturalizing, Borders & Backdrops, Erosion & Accents
#ProPlantTips for Care:
St. John's Wort is not particular about soil pH levels and is particularly suited for urban conditions, pollution, etc. St. John's Wort is easy-care when grown in average, medium, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. It prefers moist, rich, sandy loams and tolerates some drought. Deer seldom bother this plant! Just be sure to provide well-drained soils since Hypericum cannot tolerate wet feet! Apply a generous 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch to retain moisture and insulate the root system from heat and winter's chill. Sunny Boulevard® blooms on new wood, so prune in early spring to clean the mound and control its size and shape.
- Full Sun & Some Partial Shade
- Vigorous Growing Deciduous Flowering Shrub
- Needs Well-Drained Soil & Moderate Moisture Needs
- Cold-Hardy, Deer Resistant & Drought Tolerance!
- Prune Early Spring
