Plant Sentry™
Plant Sentry is designed to protect both consumers and the nursery trade from invasive plant pests and diseases. Sites that display the Plant Sentry protection badge are protected from consumers buying and nurseries shipping material carrying invasive pests and diseases.
This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Our plants are grown all over the country and lead time on items may be different because of this. Once your order is placed, you will also receive the specific shipment time-frame information as part of your order confirmation. Once an item ships, you will receive shipment notification and tracking numbers, so you can follow along while your plant travels to your doorstep. We use FedEx, UPS, or USPS at our discretion.

Growing Zones 4 - 9
Have you seen that internet story about the white flower that turns crystal clear when it is rained on or gets wet? Well, it’s mostly true! Introducing the Skeleton Flower (Diphylleia grayi) which is a bulb plant that shoots up large leaves with pointed lobes like big green Sycamore leaves!
But the real star of the show is the single cluster of snowy white blooms with yellow pollen anthers that come up in the center of each foliage clump! These petals have a powdery coating that can become translucent or partially see-through when wet before reverting to white when dry. Pollinators love these blossoms and soon powdery blue berries replace the flowers.
These ship as bareroot bulbs flower in the summer and are hardy herbaceous perennials throughout USDA growing zones 4 to 9! Growing just 12-18 inches in height with a similar spread, these low-growing plants are fast growers and genuinely unique plants you'll certainly want to show off!
Planting and Application:
Skeleton Flowers are shade-loving ephemeral plants that look great flitting through the understory of rich, organic woodlands and shade gardens! The politely spreading roots form clumps of large leaves and mix happily with other woodland wildflowers like Trillium, Columbines, Ferns, and other shade garden residents!
Loving well-drained moisture, Skeleton Flowers resemble native Mayapples but with a unique trick up their sleeve on rainy days! Plant in Rain Gardens and moist shade gardens, or tuck these unique leafy gems in berms and shady Moon Gardens!
- Single Cluster of Snow White Summer Blooms
- Powdery Petals Turn Translucent When Wet & White When Dry
- Large Pointed Fan-Shaped Leaves
- Powdery Blue Berries In Fall
- Low Growing & Politely Spreading Clumps, Woodlands & Shade Gardens
#ProPlantTips for Care:
A perennial plant native to Japan, the Skeleton Flower is best grown in moist woodland soil. Also doing best in partial to full shade, these tender perennials need protection from the hot sun. Provide a deeply mulched garden bed to keep them cool and their soil enriched. Provide regular water in average to dry sites throughout the growing season and trim back the foliage once it dies back in the fall after frost.
- Full Shade & Partial Shade Locations
- Moist Enriched Well-Drained Soil
- Regular Moisture Needs & Mulched Beds
- Prune In Late Autumn
- Hardy Perennial Plant
Be the first on the block to have the magical Skeleton Flower! Order quality bulbs and bareroot at Nature Hills and we'll ship them to your doorstep at the proper planting time for your growing zone!
