Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment
Seasonal Availability
- Bare root plants are available seasonally when dormant

Edible treats and cooling shade, the gorgeous hardwood native Shellbark Hickory Tree (Carya laciniosa) is a noble US forest resident that attracts and supports pollinators, songbirds, and wildlife! Mighty shade trees and specimens, Shellbark grows 60 - 80 feet in height and spread 40 - 60 feet wide at maturity!
In spring, the entire tree is bedecked in yellow-green spring catkins on male trees and insignificant green flowers on the female trees. The strong limbs and lush foliage are perfect for nesting birds, as the large compound leaves with 5 leaflets have a hairy saw-tooth margin and pointed tips for great texture!
Distinct shaggy bark, straight, slender trunk, and narrow, oblong crown make these natives a towering silhouette in the landscape all year round. Then, you'll enjoy a great crop of edible nuts every year from these wind-pollinated trees! The nuts ripen in fall just as the foliage turns into a luscious yellow and brown hue! You and the squirrels will be vying for the tasty nuts that are similar to Pecan nuts with a thin shell that splits on its own when they are fully ripe.
Planting and Application:
Shellbark Hickory looks wonderful as specimen trees and are towering lawn specimens and the unique bark has considerable winter interest! Plant these hardy natives as windbreak plantings that will stand the test of time and Mother Nature. Plant in areas that occasionally flood without worry as these trees do well in wetlands and along riparian areas throughout U.S. hardwood forests.
Create lush shade and habitat by planting in informal groups and rows of shelterbelts. It isn't just your birds and wildlife that will enjoy this tree. Add to your Nut tree orchard so that you too can enjoy the delicious nuts, shade, and wildlife these vital keystone species support!
