Even if you live in a mild climate, you can grow plump, juicy freestone peaches in your own backyard! The Santa Barbara Peach Tree (Prunus persica 'Santa Barbara') is a heat-tolerant peach and is one of the most popular varieties for warm hardiness zones, and we can easily understand why!
Self-pollinating, it rewards growers with a showy display of beautiful, vibrant pink blossoms that fill its limbs, ushering in spring and creating a spectacle!
Producing fleshy fruit that you'll want to grab right off the branches! The fuzzy golden-yellow fruit has a pinkish-red blush where the sun has kissed the fruit the most. Santa Barbara is letting you know it's ready to be enjoyed when you see that rosy-red blush!
Santa Barbara is everything you think of when peaches come to mind. Superb taste, intense flavor and melt-in-your-mouth goodness, with yellow flesh that has veins of red near the pit.
This tree produces large peaches, hanging in masses from the limbs come mid-season, just in time for late summer barbecues and picnics. When it's time to harvest, you'll appreciate its weeping posture and the shade from the vibrant green foliage.
How to Use Santa Barbara Peach Tree In The Landscape
Perfect fresh, straight from the tree while still warmed from the sun, or baked into your favorite desserts, these are delectable tasting peaches for all your favorite recipes!
Santa Barbara is fleshy and large, making them just the thing for cobblers, pies, tarts or crisps, or create delicious jams and jellies. They even freeze great! Slice them for a fresh treat on a hot summer's day, or canning them for enjoying their deliciousness year-round.
Truth be told, it's a tree worth owning just for the colorful element it brings to your landscape! Use as a dual-purpose specimen plant that draws attention all year long with lovely flowers, lush foliage, juicy gems and great branching structure in winter.
Shade your seating areas, garden beds or patios, or use in hedgerows for screening! Imagine your own privacy hedge that also produces fruit!
#ProPlantTips For Care
All fruiting trees require full sun for optimal results, at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day, favoring the morning sun. Hardy in USDA growing zones 7-10, these just need 300 hours of chill to produce fruit.
Choose a site with a slightly acidic, sandy-loam medium and provide fertile, rich soil that is well-drained. A generous layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture as well as insulate the root system from heat and chill.
Water consistently, and maintain average moisture throughout the growing season, especially while your tree is young. Add Nature Hills Root Booster while planting, for a life-long symbiotic relationship with the tiny feeder roots.
A semi-annual pruning is all the maintenance needed to stay healthy. It is easy to maintain smaller for any sized yard! Prune to keep an open canopy for sunlight and airflow. Read more in our Garden Blog on Peach Tree Care !

Peach Tree Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take for Santa Barbara Peach Trees to bear fruit?
Nature Hills Nursery sells fruit trees with mature root systems that are already three to four years old, so you’ll enjoy fruit sooner than you would with younger trees! Expect a young peach tree to begin fruiting by the 3rd year after you plant it.
How Fast Do Santa Barbara Peach Trees Grow?
Be sure to plant your peach in a sunny and well-drained location. Once your Santa Barbara (Prunus persica 'Santa Barbara') has been established (after the first year), it can typically add 12-18 inches of new growth in a growing season. If your plants are adding less than that in a season, it may be worth your while to check the fertility level.
Where do Santa Barbara Peach Trees Grow Best?
Peach trees grow best in well-drained, fertile soil in at least 6 hours of full sun per day or more.
Do You Need 2 Peach Trees to Produce Fruit?
All peach trees are self-fertile, however planting more than one peach tree that blooms at about the same time, boosts yields on both trees and extends your harvest time!
Harvest Times for Santa Barbara Peach Trees
Santa Barbaras are typically ready to harvest in July to August. Keep in mind exact harvest times are subject to change depending on the hardiness zones they’re being grown in.
Early-Season? Mid-Season? Late-Season? The terminology can be confusing for new peach tree growers. Weather, climate and your tree determine when it’s ripe.
When Should Santa Barbara Peach Tree be Planted?
Bareroot peach trees can be planted in spring when they are available in your area. Container-grown peach trees can be very successfully transplanted all throughout the growing season. Check for first and last frost dates for your area with your local County Extension Office.
- Plant bareroot peach trees in the early spring.
- Plant container-grown trees anytime the ground is not frozen by digging a hole as deep as the soil line and twice as wide.
