Understanding Our Container Sizes
At Nature Hills, our plants are sold in industry-standard nursery containers. You will notice we use the word "container" rather than "gallon." Container numbers follow a nursery trade size standard, not liquid volume. The number tells you the plant's size category and general maturity level. A larger container means a more established plant with a stronger root system.

Container Sizes
Quart
Plant age: 6 months to 1 year
Best for: Ground covers, perennials, ornamental grasses
What to expect: Our smallest and most affordable size. Well-suited for planting in multiples across a large area. Allow 1 to 2 seasons for full establishment.
#1 Container
Plant age: 1 to 2 years
Best for: Shrubs, perennials, smaller trees
What to expect: About the size of a large coffee can. A well-developed root system in a manageable size. Good value choice when you have time to let the plant grow into the space over a season or two.
#2 Container
Plant age: 2 to 3 years
Best for: Shrubs and trees where you want faster establishment
What to expect: A noticeable step up from a #1 in both plant size and root development. Good choice when you want visible presence without going to a larger size.
#3 Container
Plant age: 3 to 4 years
Best for: Most plants, most situations — flowering trees, shade trees, evergreen shrubs
What to expect: Our most popular size. Strong, developed root system. Plants in a #3 container make an immediate visual impact from day one. If you want a head start rather than waiting seasons for a plant to fill in, this is typically the right choice.
#5 Container and Larger
Plant age: 4 to 5+ years
Best for: Specimen plants, privacy screens, maximum instant impact
What to expect: Large, mature plants ready to make an immediate statement in your landscape. We also carry #7 and larger sizes for select varieties.
Why "Container" and Not "Gallon"?
Nursery container sizes follow an industry trade standard established for the nursery and horticulture industry. The number is a size designation, not a measurement of liquid volume. Actual soil volume varies by plant type, root mass, and growing medium. Using "container" is the accurate industry term. When you see #1, #2, or #3, think of it as the plant's size tier, not a gallon measurement.
Root Pouch Containers
Some Nature Hills plants arrive in a Root Pouch, a breathable fabric container made from 100% recycled materials. Root Pouches encourage denser root development through air pruning, which discourages root circling and promotes a stronger, more fibrous root ball at the time of planting.

There are two types. Knowing which one you have changes how you plant:
- Degradable (brown or tan fabric): Plant the entire pouch directly in the ground. The fabric breaks down naturally in the soil over time.
- Non-degradable (black or gray fabric): Remove the pouch before planting. Cut the bottom open with scissors, then peel the sides away. The fibrous root ball will hold its shape.
Not sure which type you have? Check the tag on your plant or contact us and we will confirm.

Description
Radiant and award-winning! Who doesn't love an award winner? That's exactly what you're getting when you add a Rosebud Azalea (Rhododendron 'Rosebud') to your garden! It started its premium plant journey by being awarded Rhododendron of the Year by the American Rhododendron Society along with receiving the Award of Merit. Because it seems this perky shrub is an overachiever, it was also given the First Class Certificate from the Royal Horticultural Society. So what on earth is all the fuss about?
As its name implies, it'll look a bit like your Azalea has turned into a rose bush with evergreen foliage! One look and it's easy to see that Rosebud is a special plant. Each spring, it buds rosy pink flowers featuring up to 12 delicately flushed petals. They even go as far as to have slight purplish-pink veining throughout.
Speaking of, the leaves of this looker are nothing to scoff at either. They unfurl a light and peppy green and settle to be a glossy bed to adequately showcase the blooms above. The funnel-shaped flowers will be beloved by all, including the local pollinators. Not only will butterflies dance through your garden, but you might also be lucky enough to sneak a peek at a Hummingbird. They love Azaleas!
The allure of the blossoms is just as strong when you bring them indoors. Cut a couple of branches to add to your indoor bouquets. They'll brighten up your living room, kitchen counter, or anywhere else you put them. These broad-leaved evergreen Azaleas grow into a nice compact form. So you don't have to worry about it usurping the space of the neighboring plants.
Planting and Application:
Space-saving broad-leaved evergreen Azaleas are highly coveted! They add spots of light to the landscape all year round. Of course, it makes the biggest impression in the late spring. It can also make a great addition to containers! Bring the plants right up onto the patio or next to your entryways. They're sure to make a dazzling first impression!
Use in your borders. Plant in a line to create a clean line or use them with other broad-leaved evergreens and conifers with darker foliage like Boxwoods or Thujas for a delightful-looking mixed border. Use them as the centerpiece in your island beds to give your yard some texture along with a low-maintenance pop of color each year.
If you're working with limited space, Rosebud is for you. It keeps a nice compact shape that lends perfectly to cottage gardens and accents next to your patios. If you happen to be working with a larger space, we suggest ordering a few and using them in a mass planting. Or space them out a little more sporadically to give a more natural feel.
Woodland gardens with dappled sunlight poking through deciduous trees above are also fantastic places to showcase this Azalea. The light shade helps preserve the blossoms and keeps the flower show going longer! Planting on the east side of your house works beautifully as well. Foundation planting is a strength and the east-facing exposure means Rosebud gets morning sun and some afternoon relief.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
There are plenty of ways you can make sure this award winner reaches its full potential! The easiest is to make sure it's planted in the right spot. Broad-leaved Rhododendrons and Azaleas love the part shade. Plant them somewhere they'll get some sun in the morning and shade the rest of the day. They'll thank you generously!
Another consideration is the soil you'll be planting in. Moist, well-drained soil full of rich, acidic organic matter is best. We recommend laying down a layer of mulch around the plant. It's a rather shallow-rooted shrub and the mulch helps keep the moisture even without being wet which causes root rot. The right color also helps tie the garden together and keep it looking clean.
You might find yourself wanting to give Rosebud a trim every so often. Pruning is best done once the flowers are done for the season and grab your favorite pair of gardening shears. You'll only want to trim right after flowering. Any other time and you run the risk of hurting next spring's blooms!
- Grows Best in Part Shade
- Enriched, Slightly Acidic Well-Drained Soil
- Moderate Consistent Moisture Needs
- Appreciates Mulched Beds
- Prune Immediately After Flower
- Excellent Mildew Resistance
