#ProPlantTips for Care:

Rugosa Roses flower the most when planted in the full sun. Plant in a location with good air circulation in at least 6 hours of sunlight a day, preferring morning sun to dry their leaves of dew. Handing extreme cold like a champ! Tough, adaptable and disease-resistant, Rugosa Roses have stood the test of time and are long-lived shrubs that feature vigorous growth and strong canes. Plant these in enriched, highly organic, well-drained soil. Preferring moderate, yet consistent moisture, Roses despise soggy, water-logged soil, so be sure to plant in an area with good drainage. Rugosa Roses require occasional water once established and are among the easiest-growing Roses available!

Fertilize your Rose 2-3 times a year with fertilizer geared for Roses for a healthy long-lived plant. Low maintenance once established, Rugosa only requires pruning in early spring to shape them, clean out the interior, and control their size. Avoid deadheading if you wish to enjoy the Rose Hips in the fall. Nice plants

The bare root roses I received arrived nicely packaged and in good condition. My only worry was receiving them late in our fall. Typically I have everything planted by mid October for the following year. When they said October delivery I imagined early October. I received them Monday afternoon (10/21) and kept them damp until I could plant them between snow storms on Friday (10/25). It is now 2 days later and we are looking at high temps in the single digits for the next 4 days. I mulched them with straw and am hopeful they will survive.

Dear Naomi,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience with your bare root roses. We truly appreciate your detailed feedback and are glad to hear the roses arrived in good condition. We can completely understand your concern about the later than expected delivery date—fall planting timing is so crucial, especially in colder climates like yours!

It sounds like you’ve done a great job protecting your roses by keeping them damp before planting and mulching them with straw. Given the upcoming cold spells, continuing to insulate them with mulch is an excellent call. You might also consider covering the plants with burlap or frost cloth during the coldest nights for an added layer of protection. If you have any concerns or want tailored advice as your roses enter dormancy and spring on, feel free to reach out to us—we’re here to help.

Wishing your roses a strong start and warm growth ahead!

Wishing you happy planting,

Hello Naomi,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and feedback with your bare root roses! We’re delighted to hear they arrived in good condition, though we understand your concerns about the later-than-expected delivery in October. Weather timing can definitely be tricky for planting, especially with snow and colder temperatures looming.

You did a great job keeping the roots damp and mulching with straw—both excellent steps to help protect those roses through the cold snaps. If the weather continues to drop, you might consider adding an extra insulating layer, like frost cloth or burlap, to further shield them. Also, ensuring soil moisture stays consistent (not soggy) under the mulch during winter dormancy can really support their well-being.

If you have any more questions about helping your roses acclimate or preparation for spring growth, please feel free to reach out—we’re here to assist!

White rugosa

I biught a potted rosa rugosa in august which is late and could not be found in nurseries around me any more. I repotted the plant outside following their instruction and enjoyed olenty of flowers till the trmperature dropped close to freezing. I am very satisfied with purchase.

Dear Laure,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your wonderful experience with your potted Rosa rugosa! We’re thrilled to hear you were able to welcome this lovely plant into your garden despite the seasonal challenges, especially as it can be tough finding them in local nurseries late in the season. It’s fantastic that following the repotting instructions helped your rose flourish and reward you with plenty of blooms.

As temperatures dip closer to freezing, don’t hesitate to consider additional protection such as a light mulch or frost blanket to help your Rosa rugosa safely through the cold stretches. If you ever have questions on winter care or want to explore companion plants that thrive alongside it, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

Wishing you many more seasons of beautiful blooms,
