You've seen those fairy-tale movies where the Princess sings a lovely song and all of the forest birds and animals come running to her to enjoy the song? Well, Nature Hills can't make that happen to you, but we might come close! Red Riding Hood Penstemon (Penstemon schmidel 'Red Riding Hood') is the stuff of fairy tales!

This lovely perennial comes back every year to bring beautiful, lipstick-red, tubular flowers to your garden like a magic spell. Along with those gorgeous flowers will come hordes of Hummingbirds eager to sip the abundant nectar. So, if you stand in the garden and sing a song it will certainly seem like the forest birds are coming to listen to you!

Red Riding Hood flowers are born clustered on long wand-like stems that wave in the breeze like royal flags, and just keep coming all summer into the fall. The foliage is green and upright which gives great space-saving texture to garden borders and beds.

Very heat and cold-tolerant throughout USDA growing zones 5 through 9, Beardtongue are deer and rabbit-resistant, plants that thrive in poorer soils and in sharp drainage locations. These Xeric, low water-usage herbaceous perennials are also fantastic Firewise landscaping plants too!

Planting and Application:

These drought-tolerant plants only need occasional watering once they are established and are great in Rock Gardens and urban Prairies and Meadows. Red Riding Hood is also a prime addition to Cutting gardens and perennial containers. For a truly stunning look, pair Red Riding Hood with Pink Muhly Grasses in big drifts.

Any garden becomes a pollinator garden with these vibrant red blooms! Pairing well with pinks, white, yellow, and orange, create either a formal monochromatic planting or patchwork quilt wildflower garden depending on how you want your landscape to look! Even when not in bloom, the green mounds create wonderful edging and low definition among sunny borders and garden beds.

Even if you don't have much space in your landscape, Beardtongue is also a fantastic container thriller and accent plant! Pair with spillers and fillers for wonderful seating area décor, a welcome front door planter, or add height in tall urns for formal accents on any sunny balcony, porch or patio!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Penstemon does it's very best in full sun for the strongest stems and the most blooms. Plant in very well-drained soil that's not overly enriched and avoid excess fertilizer. Prune back mounds in the fall after frost has killed back the leafy stems and tops. Mulch around their crowns with 3-4 inches of arborist bark chips, and to maintain vigor, it's recommended to divide the mounds every few years.
