Growing Zones 10-11 or as an indoor plant
The unique tropical variegated Red Hot Hibiscus Bush (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis 'Red Hot') is a big, voluminously ruffled skirt of petals around a bright red and yellow central stamen and anthers. Featuring wide-open blooms with immensely ruffled petals, the vibrant bold in-your-face red flowers bloom all growing season until fall! Standing out against the bushy, upright growth that really takes the cake - even when this plant is in full bloom - the glorious variegated leaves have incredible foliage mottled with green, white, soft pink and deep reddish burgundy hues!
Pollinators will stop by to sip nectar and these big blooms, and maybe a hummingbird or two, and the wide-open flowers are the perfect landing pads for them to land on! But there's little worry they'll pollinate the flower and produce seeds! These tropical shrubs are also fantastic as indoor houseplants and as dramatic seasonal container plants for your patio and porch! Warm growing zones that are frost-free, can enjoy Hibiscus as year-round accents!
Growing 6-8 feet in height, sometimes larger when planted outside, these shrubby bushes can reach a 4-6 foot width. Red Hot adds drama to indoor spaces and outdoor landscapes alike! Tropical Hibiscus do not like being moved around a lot. Preferring to settle into an area free of drafts in a bright sunny location. Moving plants indoors for the winter (or back outside in spring) may result in a bit of leaf drop as they reacclimate to their new surroundings, but fret not! Once they do get settled, they very quickly recover!
Planting and Application:
When planted outside, the prolific blooms will be frequently visited by bees, butterflies and hummingbirds! Red Hot is ideal in well-drained, sunny pots and planters! The prolific flowering makes these fantastic specimens anywhere! Pot up in a container on a sunny porch or patio, adding shade and privacy to balconies, and adding tropical color to a sunroom! Dress up a seating area with exotic blooms or enliven your backyard spaces. Place around poolside seating areas to create a tropical backyard getaway! Or in fancy urns on either side of your front door to welcome you home.
When grown in the ground, Hibiscus Bushes flourish throughout frost-free climates year-round. For a privacy hedge and screen that wows with its multi-color leaves will hide you from prying neighborhood eyes. Unfortunately, the bountiful blossoming and sheer amount of color on these shrubby accents are going to catch the eye of everyone passing by! Those glorious blossoms call pollinators and attract attention near and far! The highly colored foliage alone will stop traffic!
