Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment

Bold Oriental red trumpets that announce the start of the holiday season, the Merry Christmas African Amaryllis (Hippeastrum 'Merry Christmas') is a Symphony variety of Amaryllis that resembles big red satellites! Saturated color through and through, the multiple blooms open into enormous trumpets that encircle the strong sturdy stems!
Fringed in strappy green foliage, these gorgeous perennial bulbs can be forced indoors for stunning winter décor! Fast-growing, the foliage is perfect for showcasing the enormous flowers that look gorgeous on their own when not in bloom!
Fantastic gift items, Merry Christmas African Amaryllis can be planted outside in USDA growing zones 9 to 10, and in cooler climates can plant Merry Christmas bulbs outside but they will need to be dug up before frost and stored in a cool dark location for the winter as you would with Dahlia and Canna Lily.
Planting and Application:

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Preferring full sun outdoors and bright indirect sun indoors, Amaryllis bulbs should be planted in enriched, well-drained soil, pointed end up, with the neck and top third of the bulb above the soil. Then water moderately and mulch well. Disliking soggy soil, water sparingly to ensure the bulb has just enough moisture to grow. Amaryllis should be dead-headed as soon as the blooms fade, but the foliage looks handsome all growing season! Keep the handsome foliage intact and place them in a bright sunny window to make food for the bulb.
- Full Sun & Partial Shade
- Moderately Moist Well-Drained Organic Soil
- Deadhead After Bloom & Clean Mound When Leaves Yellow
- Appreciates Mulched Beds Outdoors
- Dislikes Soggy Soil
