Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes
Container sizes indicate plant age and growing capacity rather than liquid volume equivalents. Our containers follow industry-standard nursery "trade gallon" specifications, which differ from standard liquid gallon measurements.

- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment

Growing Zones
Dramatic color combo, the dwarf Louis Cottin Canna Lily (Canna x generalis 'Louis Cottin') is a fantastic smaller Canna with incredible peachy-orange flowers with red buds, red centers, and occasional red streaks and sepals, held above maroon-toned dark green leaves on upright maroon stems!
Louis Cottin Canna Lily flowers throughout the summer months and well into the fall, bringing the pollinators and curious hummingbirds to sip nectar and gather pollen! Growing a smaller 24-40 inches in height when in bloom, but only spread 18-24 inches wide in an upright clump.
Canna Lilies are fantastic summer-blooming exotic perennials with rhizomes that thrive all year in frost-free growing zones of 9 and up. But all growing zones can enjoy these plants as seasonal summer accents, or annuals. Keep them for next year by digging up and storing the bulbs as one would Dahlia and Elephant Ears for the winter!
Landscape Application:
Louis Cottin Dwarf Canna Lily are iconic patio and poolside plants, giving any area a fast-growing, exotic flair! Create high-impact with rows or clusters of these plants among your perennial and Pollinator gardens! Sunny beds and borders get dramatic color uplifts while your home's foundation plantings get season-long greenery as facer plants and colorful focal points.
Louis Cottin works in large pots, planters, and even balcony and container gardens! Mix among other annuals, perennials, or tropical plants for fast-filling color and greenery, extending your season of bloom and accenting other plants beautifully. Northern gardeners can simply dig these rhizomes up in the fall and store them for the winter, or use them as annuals.

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Keep these full-sun plants in moderately moist to almost wet enriched soil, that is always well-drained so they do not rot. It is also a good idea to ensure that Canna has a 3-4-inch layer of arborist mulch over the surface, especially in drier, hotter areas. Provide regular fertilizer and deadhead when blooming is done. Canna are spring-planted summer-flowering rhizomes and are not frost-hardy, so they do need to be dug in the fall before they freeze. Keep them in a cool, dark, frost-free area in a bag in a garage or shed.
