Cute, sweet rind, Centennial Variegated Kumquat Tree (Fortunella japonica 'Centennial') tastes like a cross between a Kumquat and a Mandarin Orange - sweet and tangy, not sour like you'd expect. And they can be really tart! But the Centennial Variegated Kumquat isn't like any other Kumquat varieties. This one is unique in looks as well as taste!

Another way this beautiful tree stands out is the leaf coloration. The foliage is a variegated and striped yellow and green, which is unusual for Citrus. The fruits themselves are also striped with yellow with green stripes while they are immature. Eventually turning orange with red stripes when they mature.

Even though it flowers with gleaming white blooms in fall and the fruits ripen in late winter, Centennial can hold its fruit for months at a time,e so that there appears to be fruit and flowers on the tree year-round in the right climates.

Planting and Application:

If you don't live in the right climate though, don't fret. This tree grows great in a pot by a sunny window, giving you that Citrus Tree scent year-round. This makes the Centennial perfect for northern gardeners, allowing them to bring the tree indoors for the cold winters, yet still enjoy it as a patio and porch tree through the summers.

In the ground, Centennial is a gorgeous specimen and focal point, adorning any garden with glossy foliage and scented white blossoms. Welcome yourself home by planting this tree near your front entry, or decorate your back patio with these exotic-looking trees!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Citrus trees do their best in an enriched environment that is very well-drained. Nothing ensures a fast death for these trees than soggy soil. Be sure to give the Centennial Kumquat tree full sun and a consistent Fertilizing schedule for the best health and the most fruit!

If the temperatures in your area ever dip below that 40°F range or are prone to overnight frosts, then you need to be ready to protect your tree.

Although Citrus can grow year-round in warmer regions (zones 9 and 10), they can also thrive in colder areas (zones 4 to 7) as long as the tree is brought indoors before the first frost of winter.

In zone 8, you can cover your tree in the event of a cold snap or unexpected overnight freeze. Citrus will need to be planted in a sheltered spot to avoid the worst of the chill, and not planted in a low area that collects cold air. If a spot like that is unavailable, or you are in a chill-prone climate, then you are safer planting Citrus Trees in a large, deep container with wheels to easily move them to a protected location or indoors when needed.

In cold growing zones, begin slowly acclimating your tree indoors in the fall, or into a protected location, eventually moving your tree inside. Indoor plants need a bright indirect sun window, greenhouse, sunroom, or enclosed patio for the winter. In spring, reverse this process and begin acclimating your tree to again be back out in the full sun all summer. This reduces stress and leaf drop.

Excellent fruit

Not many fruit trees have flowers and mature fruit on it at the same time, but this kumquat sure does. I planted it in a container because I am not sure how much cold it can stand. Plan to bring it indoors during the winter months just to be on the safe side. Luscious fruit!

Hello Dee,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with your Centennial Variegated Kumquat Tree! We love hearing how unique it is to enjoy both blossoms and mature fruit simultaneously—that’s such a special feature of this beautiful plant. Your idea to keep it in a container and bring it indoors during colder months is perfect, especially since kumquats thrive best in mild temperatures. Indoor care during frost seasons will certainly help protect your tree and encourage healthy growth season after season.

If you’re looking for a little extra guidance, be sure the tree gets plenty of bright, indirect light while indoors and avoid overwatering—allow the top inch of soil to dry out before watering again. Also, rotating the plant occasionally can help maintain even growth. For precise seasonal tips, our Plant Care Guide located on our website is a great resource.

Thank you again for your kind review, Dee. We’re thrilled your kumquat is producing luscious fruit and bringing joy to your space!

Hi Dee,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with your Centennial Variegated Kumquat Tree! It’s truly special to hear that your tree is flowering and fruiting at the same time—that’s one of the unique joys of growing kumquats. Planting it in a container is a fantastic idea, especially since you’re mindful about protecting it from cold weather. Bringing it indoors during the winter is an excellent strategy, as these trees prefer temperatures not dropping below freezing and will thrive best with plenty of bright light when inside.

To keep your kumquat healthy indoors, try placing it near a south-facing window or supplementing with a grow light if natural sunlight is limited. Also, maintain moderate humidity and water when the top inch of soil feels dry—kumquats enjoy consistent moisture but dislike soggy roots.

If you ever need tips on citrus tree care through the seasons or wish to explore companion plants for your kumquat, we’re always here to help. Enjoy those luscious fruits—they’re truly a delight!

Rain or shine, happy growing!

Attractive plant

An extremely attractive plant and the Centennial variegated kumquat has matching variegated looking fruit. It really brightens up a corner of my den when I bring it inside for the winter.

Dear Tanner,

Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback! We’re thrilled to hear that your Centennial Variegated Kumquat tree is bringing such charm and vibrant color to your den. It’s especially delightful to know the variegated fruit compliments the foliage — those little details really make these plants stand out indoors during the winter months.

If you’re looking to help your kumquat thrive inside, be sure to place it in a bright, sunny spot, ideally near a south-facing window, and maintain consistent moisture without overwatering. A periodic misting can also help mimic its outside environment during drier winter air.
