Description
Kaleidoscope Blend Carrot (Daucus carota subsp. sativus) is a mix of carrot varieties in assorted root colors, so a single planting fills the harvest basket with color. Carrots are cool-season vegetables grown as annuals, and the roots reach full size in about 70 to 120 days, depending on variety and weather.
Your carrots arrive growing in a quart container. Each plant forms a single taproot that is easily damaged, so set the whole root ball in the ground at the same depth it grew, without breaking it apart or loosening the roots. If the pot holds several seedlings, snip the extras at soil level so the rest stand 2 to 3 inches apart. Carrots also grow well in a container at least 10 inches deep.
Harvest any time after the roots reach full size, usually when the top of the root starts to push up out of the soil. The leafy tops are edible too, cooked or blended into pesto. Carrots left in the ground into a second year will flower, and the blooms draw bees and butterflies; the plant is also a host for the black swallowtail butterfly.
- Light: Full sun, tolerates partial shade.
- Water: Keep the soil evenly moist several inches down. Dry soil makes the roots tough and bitter.
- Soil: Loose, well-drained, neutral to slightly acidic sandy loam. Heavy clay makes the roots fork and twist.
- Care: Go light on nitrogen fertilizer, which pushes leafy tops at the expense of the roots.
Add Kaleidoscope Blend Carrot to your cart for a colorful row in your vegetable garden.
