The adaptable and easy-to-grow Japanese Boxwood (Buxus microphylla var. japonica) is a must-have for your garden if you need a hardy, drought-resistant shrub, hedge, or year-round specimen plant in your landscape! Wrap yourself and your yard in fine-textured broadleaf evergreenery, seclusion, and privacy!
Though the Japanese Boxwood shrub looks and acts like other Boxwoods - it grows slowly, stays green year-round, and can take pruning like a champ - it differs from other types of Boxwood in one very important way; the roots of this Boxwood go much deeper than any other type. This means that it handles drought much, much better!
Whether you have an estate, a suburban two-story, or a trailer home, the Japanese Boxwood shrub will work in your landscape! Easily sheared or pruned into any size or shape your garden plan needs, these evergreen shrubs can naturally reach a 4-6 foot tall and wide rounded shape when not pruned. Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 6 to 10, these are widely adaptable to many climates and conditions!
Planting and Application:
Boxwood will bring beautiful structure to any style of yard. Plant two of them as an excellent choice to flank a front entrance or plant on either side of a garden gate. Their crisp presence will welcome your guests with a classic style! Either as a privacy hedge or for property division, Boxwood are up to the challenge!
This evergreen shrub really suits a uniform, formal design...and with good reason! They have been the perfect candidate for shearing and year-round greenery for centuries. Create your own castle garden and feel like a king or queen while looking out over your tidy, trimmed yard!
This Boxwood can frame a garden bed, add an evergreen backdrop to your perennial or Rose garden, create a uniform foundation hedge, or line a pathway or your property line! Sheared or naturally fluffy, Japanese Boxwood even sits pretty in a planter box or a decorative large urn! Set your planter onto caster wheels and create moving privacy and shade around your porch or patio!
- Handsome Broadleaf Evergreen Foliage
- Rounded Natural Form Can Be Sheared or Pruned Smaller
- Very Easy to Grow & Low-Maintenance
- Highly Adaptable!
- Perfect Hedges, Property Division, Privacy & Container Specimens
#ProPlantTips for Care:
The Japanese Boxwood shrub does fine in full sun or light shade and needs to have well-drained soil, but does tolerate clay that drains well. New plants need regular moisture access but once established, these shrubs can handle some drought due to their very deep roots! Support this root development by planting with Nature Hills Root Booster, and protect your investment with a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch over the entire soil system.
These evergreens need some wind protection in winter if grown on an exposed site in Zone 6 and 7, otherwise, you can treat them with wilt-stop and it's recommended you water these shrubs very well in the fall to prepare them for winter.
Boxwood can be sheared into a low hedge but grows slowly enough that you don't have to prune it very often. It is best to prune or shear right after the first flush of growth in the spring. Rarely bothered by deer, rabbits, or pests, this is truly an easy plant to grow!
- Full Sun & Some Partial Shade
- Moderate Moisture Needs - Drought Resistant Deep Roots!
- Any Well-Drained Soil Type
