Growing Zones 3-8
The Late Panicle Hydrangea bush (Hydrangea paniculata 'Tardiva') is a gorgeous Panicle Hydrangea shrub with creamy-white, airy flowers that can reach 10-12" in length! You might have guessed by the odd name, but Late Panicle flowers later in the season - the blooms won't appear until late August! Definitely, a shrub to intersperse among your Hydrangea collection to extend your season of bloom big time!
Each of the darling creamy-white florets has buds tinged in pink and can develop pinkish blushes as they open and mature on their reddish stems and handsome sturdy stems! Backed by a sizeable flush of deep green foliage with the iconic Hydrangea quilting and toothy edges, these are impressive shrubs in the landscape even when not in bloom.
The flower heads will stay on the plant during much of the winter if conditions are not severe, lending Late Panicle some late-season interest. Very cold-hardy in USDA growing zones 3-8, these fast-growing flowering ornamentals are a pollinator's favorite for a late-season snack before the cold sets in! Don't worry about soil pH like some Hydrangeas, Panicles hold their color regardless.
Planting and Application:
These shrubs are fast-growing and are great for informal screens! Add a secluded feel to your front or back yard with a staggered row of these shrubs to make your property feel more private, give birds a place to roost and nest, and dampen sound from the street. Impressive specimen plants or focal points, you can 'limb up' your shrub to look more like an informal multi-trunked tree-form by removing lower side branches and exposing the branching framework. Or leave the branches to the ground for privacy all growing season!
These are amazing for cut arrangements! Snip those glorious blossoms for fresh bouquets and later as they turn tan for the winter, for including in winter dried décor. Cut the flower heads when they are fully open and hang to dry in a warm, airy place. Use these butterfly magnets in your pollinator garden as green backdrops for all your earlier flowering shrubs, Roses and perennials!
- 10-12" Long Panicles of Creamy White Florets

- Gorgeous Green Foliage
- Late Blooming & Fast Growing

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Plant Late Panicle in full sun and partial shade, favoring morning sun. If you are in the hottest of its favored growing zones, provide afternoon shade from the brunt of the summer sun. Keep the soil moderately moist and top dress with 3-4 inches of arborist mulch chips. You may prune every year, for size and to remove old growth, but no more than 1/3 of the plant. Only prune in the very early spring or you’ll accidentally remove next year's blooms! These plants look best when they are kept pruned to keep them thick at the base. They are hardy and will not need to be covered to flower. Late Panicle is easy to grow and they will tolerate less than ideal soil conditions.
