This proprietary eCommerce software prevents the shipment of a restricted plant to each state. The Plant Sentry system includes a shipment certification program. The Plant Sentry Compliance Officer works closely with NatureHills.com and each nursery or fulfillment center to ensure only compliant plants are sold to customers.

Experience often brings wisdom, and it's really not surprising that so many savvy gardeners choose Hosta as their favorite perennial! They boast an easy-care nature and trendy variegated foliage. We've even heard tell of people planting multiple Hosta varieties, and then bragging about their collection online!

If you are in search of a "Crown Jewel" for a new, or existing Hosta collection - the Whirlwind Hosta (Hosta 'Whirlwind') is a fabulous selection. Whirlwind is a highly textured selection featuring large, deeply ribbed, wavy leaves. But it's the rare coloration that really sets this plant apart from its peers. Every leaf is unique, painted with broad brushstrokes of white, creamy yellow, bold lime green, and spring green.

Also known as Plantain Lily, Whirlwind is hardy throughout USDA growing zones 3 to 8 and grows to a low-mounding 3-4 feet width. So delightfully easy to grow, Whirlwind is perfect for even the most novice gardeners!

Planting and Application:

Variegated foliage keeps your garden design interesting, even while plants are out of their bloom season. Whirlwind looks great all season long, and you can even use the beautiful foliage for use in your cut flower arrangements. You'll look forward to late summer when pale lavender blooms form above the wonderful leaves. The trumpet-shaped blossoms attract a following of Hummingbirds and pollinators to your garden!

Great for landscapes big and small, and even those without a yard at all, Whirlwind is a perfect selection for shade or woodland gardens, and containers and is excellent used in mass and understory edging! Highlight your garden hardscapes, beneath the shade of a hedge or foundation planting, the shaded bases of hedges and leggy shrubs and trees as facer plants.

  • Ribbed, Wavy Lime & Spring Green Foliage
  • Fountain-Like Form Grows Wide
  • Pollinators & Hummingbirds Adore Them
  • Lavender Blooms on Tall Slender Scapes
  • Specimens, Bed & Border Edging, Facer Plants & Shade Garden Accents

#ProPlantTips for Care:

These will grow beautifully for you in well-drained soil in partial or full shade. High-filtered or dappled sunlight is necessary for clean, healthy growth. An herbaceous Perennial, Hosta grows best in enriched, consistently moist, well-drained soils with a pH between 5.5 and 7.5. Top-dress with a 3 - 4 inch thick layer of arborist mulch over the soil surface, especially in dry shade conditions. Deadhead Hostas as soon as the flowers fade for a tidy look, and in fall when these herbaceous Perennials die back from the cold, it's time to prune the mound clean and remove the dead foliage. Divide your Hosta clumps every 3-5 years to maintain vigor.

  • Full Shade Perennial Also Tolerates Partial Shade
  • Moist Well-Drained Enriched Soil
  • Low-Maintenance & Remarkably Easy Care
  • Deadhead After Flowering & Prune Late Fall After Frost
  • Cold Hardy & Humidity Tolerant

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Hostas need full sun or shade?

Hosta does best in full sun in cooler climates but does appreciate afternoon protection from the worst of the summer sun, especially in the hottest of their growing zone range. In the hottest climates, Hosta like partial shade or dappled shade, and some varieties will do great in full shade.

Where do Hostas grow best?

Hosta plants love enriched, well-drained soil that is moderately yet consistently moist throughout the growing season. They appreciate mulched garden beds.

Do Hostas come back every year? Are Hostas a perennial plant?

With vigorous carefree growth, Hostas are herbaceous perennial plants that will return year after year with little maintenance.

What do you do with Hostas in the fall? What do you do with Hostas in the winter?

Hosta leaves will die back after frost but the crowns and roots remain intact and dormant until next spring. Prune back the leaves once they turn brown in the autumn and remove them from the plant's area. For winter protection, add a layer of compost or mulch over the crowns to protect them from the chill.

Do Hosta attract hummingbirds or pollinators?

Hostas are loved by pollinators and hummingbirds! All walks of beneficial pollinators will show up to sip their nectar.
