Ultra-hardy and adaptable, the Emerald Mound Honeysuckle (Lonicera xylosteum 'Emerald Mound') is a versatile, wide-spreading shrub with many ornamental features! Emerald Mound is one of the earliest plants to leaf out in the spring! Its graceful, oval-shaped leaves are a refreshing light blue-green that fills out the shrub for an attractive landscape addition all season long.
Spring brings yellow-hued, white flowers that transition to berries of a deep red shade for mid-summer through fall. The fragrant flowers have a strong appeal for butterflies, bees, and Hummingbirds, and your songbirds will adore you for the berries. Plant multiple shrubs to ensure pollination amongst these self-sterile bushes.
This deciduous shrub fills out all the way to the ground so you don't need facer plants, and its dense nature makes it ideal for shaping. It also has a natural beauty, so whether you leave it to grow wild or choose to prune it, it will still present a beautiful, mounded image in your yard. Cold-hardy throughout USDA growing zones 4 to 8, there are few locations around your property that won't be perfect for a Bush Honeysuckle!
Planting and Application:
Plant one of these in a naturalized area or use it as a foundation plant. Just 2-3 feet tall, Emerald Mound spreads 4 to 6 feet wide to cover large swaths of ground without the need for multiple shrubs! These are incredible Rock Garden plants and vibrant erosion control on hillsides, those hard-to-mow-slopes become verdant hills of green!
These low-growing ornamentals would even do well for a large groundcover area. An Emerald Mound here or there in your garden will fill in those small, empty spaces with early color, fragrant flowers, and even berries for your wildlife and backyard birds.
- Early Green Foliage & Brilliant Yellowish-White Flowers

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Honeysuckles are even easy to grow! Adaptable to a variety of soils, these are vigorous and nearly indestructible. Plant in the full sun and in a location with very well-drained soil for best results. Provide moderate regular watering for new installations, but after these bushes are established, they become low-water usage landscaping plants! If pruning or shearing is needed, do so in late winter or very early spring. This Lonicera Honeysuckle grows well in most soil types and pH levels and only dislikes areas with standing water.
- Full Sun
- Low Moisture Needs Once Established
- Highly Adaptable to Soil & Environment
- Great in Urban Settings
- Prune Late Winter or Very Early Spring If Needed
Don't wait too long to jump on the Honeysuckle bush bandwagon! Commercial growers and savvy gardeners alike are all realizing the low-maintenance perks and benefits of these hardy native cultivars!
