#ProPlantTips For Care
Hardy in USDA growing zones 5-9, these are both cold and heat tolerant trees. This deciduous fruit tree needs full sun to do its best. Requiring at least 6 hours of sunlight per day.
Best in rich, well-drained soil, this Peach tree is widely adaptable. Harken is self-fruitful, so you can start with just one tree if you like.
Requiring moderate, yet consistent moisture, while drought-resistant once established, it’s crucial to protect your investment by watering the root ball regularly. Water young trees very well until they are established, and after, provide supplemental watering during fruiting, during summers and in times of drought.
Prune in summer to control the size, remove suckers and water growth, but prune in winter to open the canopy to sunlight and air circulation, and to remove damaged, dead or diseased branching. Head over to our Garden Blog for more tips and tricks for caring for your Peach tree!

Flavorful Harken Peach is Cold-Hardy
The Harken Peach is another high-quality introduction from the world-famous Harrow Research and Development Centre in Harrow, Ontario. Since 1909, Harrow has introduced some of the most important fruit varieties for the cold climate growers and Harken is one of their best.
A relatively new selection originating as a cross between Redskin Elberta and the Sunhaven Peach, Harken was introduced in 1970 after it was sent for extensive testing by W.D Armstrong and Frank Street, of the University of Kentucky.
Showing better disease resistance compared to the popular Red Haven Peach, and with more uniform ripening, Harken was introduced to the commercial market as a hardy selection for cold climate growers.
Aside from being hardy, Harken quickly was recognized for its fine eating quality, fast to become noted for a rich, sweet flavor with a non-browning flesh. As Harken became more widely planted by commercial growers, the home gardener took note and the variety became a sought after selection for the cold climate backyard growers.
The Harken was soon being tested by home gardeners throughout the country and reports of the quality appeared from Maine to the West Coast. The range of adaptability of the Harken became apparent quickly. Many publications with Peach variety recommendations for Western Washington State, Maine, and New Jersey proclaimed it to be one of the highest-rated Peaches for taste and disease resistance. This continued into California, where the Harken was rated in a number of fruit tastings as one of the top flavored Peach varieties, only adding to its widespread appeal.
The wide range of adaptability and the fine flavor have placed Harken as one of the top choices for the home gardener in zones 5-9. Not a low chill selection, the Harken does well into zone 9, where its melting flesh, rich, sweet flavor along with its great productivity have all contributed to Harken becoming a greatly appreciated Peach selection.
