Versatile, gorgeous color! The elegance and style come together in this large, robust broad-leaved evergreen shrub. Use George L. Taber Azalea (Rhododendron x 'George L. Taber') to create a delightful garden experience! Each bloom is nearly white with a pale orchid-lavender overcast. The throat showcases a deeper magenta tone, with a rosy-pink splotch. From a distance, the ombre colorway reads as a sophisticated pink and white variegation!
The impact of the blooms has to be seen to be believed. And you can enjoy the masses of showy blooms twice a year! Light and bright, multi-colored flowers cover the plant from top to bottom in early spring. In fall, as the weather cools, a happy George L. Taber will produce a second, smaller flush of blooms. Both flushes of flowers are highly attractive to pollinators and hummingbirds!
This outstanding color contrasts beautifully, set as it is against the dark foliage. Long, leathery evergreen Azalea leaves remain green all through the growing season and well beyond. They come to a cute point at the tip. These big boys are so versatile and robust. Their larger size and prolific, reblooming nature will become a standout in your landscape. Heat and humidity-tolerant throughout USDA growing zones 8 to 10, this is a very lovely tropical and hot growing zone flowering ornamental!
Planting and Application:
George L. Taber produces an incredible display of wonderful flowers and the lavish show will stop traffic on your street! Consider this large plant as a wonderful specimen in your foundation plantings. Use one or more at the corner of your house to anchor the design. No need to worry about these non-aggressive roots!
This lovely variety of Azalea can grow quite large, which makes it a very useful landscaping plant. Use it as a marvelous flowering hedge by planting several in a row. To create a solid screen, plant them 3 feet apart on center. You'll measure from the center of one to the center of the next plant. Boost your privacy with several planted behind your patio furniture. Run a friendly fence between you and your messy neighbor to block that awful view.
Or, why not carve out some personal space just for yourself in your backyard? More and more people are creating special Meditation Gardens, where you can unwind and relax in peace and comfort. Plant George L. Taber Azaleas to create living, flowering walls for your special garden room. With thoughtful planning, you can enjoy a getaway staycation any day of the week!

#ProPlantTips For Care
George L. Taber Azalea can perform well in full sun but will appreciate a little afternoon shade in the hottest part of the day. Try them on the east side of your property, or larger evergreen trees. Rhododendrons and Azaleas love moist, acidic, well-drained soil. If you have heavy, clay soil that retains water, you'll want to create an 18-inch raised planting bed to improve your drainage. Use native soil with a few small handfuls of peat moss and pine needle soil conditioner added for best results. Far better to plant Azaleas too high, than too low. To help mound them up when planting, leave a few inches of the root ball showing above the ground.
Provide a moderate amount of water on a regular basis. Carefully cover with a dense layer of pine bark or straw mulch to cover the root system. Be sure to pull the mulch back several inches from the main stems. That mulch layer will also help keep the ground moist, so plan to reapply it each year. Keep your plantings weeded, as George L. Taber's shallow roots won't like the competition. We recommend creating a mulched planting bed to make it easy for yourself.
Ensure your plants receive plenty of air circulation. It's never a good idea to plant right next to a building, or in a tight corner. Good airflow around each plant helps dry the foliage and reduces the potential for disease. Apply a good, organic, slow-release fertilizer in early spring according to the product directions. Look for a formula designed for Acid Loving plants.
Prune to shape only after the first flush of spring flowers is passed. We recommend keeping this plant on the natural side. Avoid a tightly-clipped hedge pruning style on George L. Taber, please.
- Grows in Full Sun or Partial Shade
- Low Maintenance in Slightly Acidic Well-Drained Soil

Azalea and Rhododendron Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the best place to plant Rhododendrons?
Azaleas and Rhododendrons prefer partial shade (both dappled shade all day or morning sun with afternoon shade). Plant in a slightly acidic, consistently moist, enriched, and well-drained soil location for best results. Their shallow roots dislike soggy soil but thrive with a 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch over their surface.
How big do Rhododendrons get?
George L. Taber Azalea can grow 6-8 feet in height and 5-6 feet in width, when grown in optimal conditions.
Are Rhododendrons low maintenance?
Azalea and Rhododendron shrubs are very easy to grow and low maintenance. Water during drought, prune only after flowering and fertilize with an acid-loving organic, slow-release flowering plant fertilizer.
What is the difference between Rhododendrons and Azaleas?
All Azaleas are Rhododendrons but not all Rhodondendrons are Azaleas. Azalea tends to be smaller-sized with smaller leaves and stems, while Rhododendrons can be larger with stout branching and larger bloom trusses. There can both be either deciduous or broad-leaved evergreens.
