Planting & Care

Where to Plant

  • Sunlight: This Hellebore thrives in partial to full shade, needing about 2 to 4 hours of dappled sunlight. While it can handle more sun in cooler climates, too much direct afternoon heat will scorch the unique marbled foliage and fade the pink blooms prematurely.
  • Soil: Aim for rich, organic soil that mimics a forest floor and drains well. If you have heavy clay, mix in several inches of compost or aged bark to create "breathing room" for the roots, as they will rot in standing water.

Watering Requirements

During the first year, water deeply twice a week to ensure the root ball settles into its new home. Once established, Penny's Pink is remarkably drought tolerant, though a lack of moisture during the heat of summer can result in fewer flower buds the following spring. Think of consistent moisture as fuel for next year's show; if the soil stays bone dry for too long, the plant will prioritize survival over blooming.

Pruning Tips

This plant produces flowers on the previous season's growth, but the "pruning" is mostly cosmetic. In late winter or very early spring, just as the new flower buds emerge from the center, snip off the old, tattered leaves from last year at the base. This "spring cleaning" prevents old foliage from hiding the new blossoms and stops any overwintering fungal spores from spreading to the fresh growth.

Fertilizer Needs

Apply a balanced, slow release granular fertilizer or a layer of rich compost in early spring just as new growth begins. Avoid using high nitrogen fertilizers late in the summer or fall, as this encourages tender green growth that will be easily damaged by the first hard freeze. Providing nutrients early gives the plant the energy it needs to build strong stems before the winter dormancy period begins.

Description

First blush, the FrostKiss™ Penny's Pink® Hellebore (Helleborus x 'EPBRD01') is a late winter and early spring perennial darling! The soft smoky-pinkish plum and chartreuse blossoms shyly nod down on their tall, slender purple stems, often popping up right through the melting late winter snows!

Penny's Pink® forms tight, compact mounds of dark green foliage with lighter green veins, giving these compact gems a two-tone effect. The blooms are a treat for early emerging pollinators and the shower of yellow stamen at the centers of each blossom is a welcome landing pad!

The FrostKiss™ series of flowering Hellebore have been selected for their tolerance of more sun in cooler summers than their shade-loving counterparts. Adding a breath of fresh color to the dreary winter landscape, while brightening spring borders. Often, in mild winters, the foliage can remain evergreen!

Planting and Application:

Hellebores are ideal companions with early spring bulbs and for planting among later emerging perennials and shrubs. The burst of fresh color is a welcome sight, and the later arriving foliage of the other plants is a welcome shade for these shade-loving darlings! Intersperse throughout perennial and cottage borders where they will slowly spread and ramble among the other plants.

Penny's Pink® is also fantastic long-stemmed blooms for bouquets, so be sure to include a few extras in your garden and planters for the first floral arrangements of the year. Deadheading keeps the blooms returning most of the spring for an extended flowering time! Shade gardens and Zen gardens alike benefit from the elegance and classic beauty of these woodland wildflowers.
