Understanding Plant Options
Nature Hills offers plants in two main formats:
- Container Plants: Grown in pots with soil, sized by container volume and plant age
- Bare Root Plants: Dormant plants without soil, sized by height measurements
Container Plant Sizes

- Age Indicators: Container size primarily indicates plant age and maturity rather than liquid volume equivalents
Growing Conditions
- Plant size can vary based on variety and growing conditions
- Container size helps indicate plant maturity and establishment level
- Larger containers generally mean more established root systems and faster landscape establishment

Unique downward-facing blooms with a crown of green foliage, the tall stems of the Fritillaria are regal perennial bulbs that are outstanding specimens and container thrillers! With bold colors and a tropical flair, the Fritillaria Bulb Blend (Fritillaria 'Rubra', Fritillaria 'Lutea') has two varieties of these showy plants!
A fantastic combination of the lemony yellow Lutea Fritillaria and the orangy Rubra Fritillaria brings exotic color to your sunny garden beds and containers! The ring of downward-facing trumpet-shaped blooms have pointed petals that stand atop a tall, slender stem. The stem is filled with strappy green leaves similar to their closely related Lilies, lining the entire length of each.
Fritillaria, also known as Crown Imperials, are easy to grow and usually not bothered by deer, rodents, or Black Walnut juglone. Growing upward of 3 feet in height, the fast-growing stems rise above the green foliage clumps throughout USDA planting zones 5-8.
Planting and Application:
These fragrant blooms look like nothing else you've seen in the typical spring garden! Rubra and Lutea Fritillaria are must-haves for tropical poolside gardens and planters and do well in Rock Gardens. These fancy curiosities at the back of the garden border, or adding a tropical element to modern, architectural plantings and formal gardens alike. Best in rows and groupings, these Spring bulbs have a whimsical look!
Fritillaria have a quirky and flamboyant appearance making it a crown jewel for gardeners! Featuring drooping clusters of deep red bells with pointed petals that ring the top of a tall, sturdy green stem. The bulbs of Red Crown are dramatic focal points in the landscape and will thrill you when used in floral bouquets!
Gorgeous vertical elements, Crown Imperials are dramatic thrillers in pots and planters around sunny porches, as unique architectural accents on front porches, or as unique features in mixed seating area planters that pollinators and children will be drawn to!

#ProPlantTips for Care:
Fritillaria bulbs have unique fleshy scales and should be planted about three times their length into the ground. They must have well-drained soil and lots of sunshine all growing season but can handle partial sun in hotter growing zones. In colder zones, plant deeper and mulch well so they can survive the winter.
Add bulb fertilizer to each hole for best results and provide moderate moisture during the growing season. Deer and rodent-resistant, there are no pests or disease issues to worry about. Deadhead once the flowers fade but keep the leaves to make food for the bulbs, then prune them back when the foliage yellows.
- Full Sun or Partial Shade
- Moderately Moist Well-Drained Soil
- Deadhead After Bloom, Prune to Ground When Leaves Yellow
- Very Cold & Heat Hardy
- Deer & Rodent Resistant
